[Michlib-l] Extension of Temporary Closure of Places of Public Accommodation

We totally understand that. Many of our restaurants didn't open when the
Governor gave the go ahead..they either opened to offer curbside or gave a
date of opening when they would be ready. What should happen is that the
Governor give the go ahead..and each individual library, due to
circumstances, should then open or remain closed, or offer curbside that
fits with what is happening in the their community. Not having "control" of
that opening/curbside/closing as directors has been frustrating. Especially
in regions where the Governor has opened other retail/gov't etc.

Advocating is still important, but it is too each individual library's
decision/choice to open that is at issue.

You need to do what's right for your community. If it doesn't feel safe,
don't do it. My sister lives in an area of the UP where there was 1 reported
case and no deaths. It feels like her library should be able to at least do
curbside.

Not all of our libraries are in areas where reopening feels safe yet. Many
of us serve very vulnerable populations and have vulnerable members on our
teams.

I don't think this will necessarily come with much support, but I will not
be advocating to reopen.

I am also hearing patrons wonder how they can sit with me in a bar and have
a drink, but they can't pull up outside the library and get books and other
materials their tax dollars are paying for. Many seem to think it is my
decision. Thankfully, I am able to explain that it isn't my choice or my
Board's choice to remain completely closed. Though it is becoming mentally
exhausting to shop in our local stores because I have to have the same
conversation over and over again.

I have made some attempt to contact our local and state politicians. I am
stepping it up this week. I know that Senator McBroom here in the 38th
District is doing all he can to get the U.P. further re-opened.

Hang in there, everyone!

Cynthia,

Our library and myself have contacted the Governor numerous times, including
my Board and my staff. I have patrons angry that they can sit down in a
restaurant but can't at least pick up books by curbside. All I have
received from the Governor is a template letter about the crisis and never
in the response did it mention our request for curbside. Also, I know our
cooperative libraries have also reached out to her. At this time, I just
don't know what it is going to take for her to listen when her office must
be flooded with requests from libraries across the state.

To add, as libraries, we should be contacting our local news sources to also
address this. I think if more news were to report that libraries are ready,
and they were able to address her at one of her online news press then
perhaps she would get the message that we are ready for curbside.

Best,

I believe it's time (or thank you if you have) for librarians to contact the
Governor's office and their local leaders to explain to them how public
libraries can safely provide curbside service. With some regions open to
sit-down restaurants, and retailers allowed to have customers in their
stores, public libraries certainly should be allowed to provide curbside
service through safe procedures and distancing.

I have emailed and left phone messages for Gov. Whitmer, Dr. Khaldun, and
others explaining how policies and procedures have been established to
enable safe delivery of "essential" reading materials to patrons. Feeding
the mind is, to me, essential. I had agreed with the Governor's EOs until
this last one still ignored the public library's ability to safely provide
curbside service. We need to be able to recall employees to the library
immediately, provide training and PPE, and within days we could safely
provide pickup of pre-ordered materials. Incoming materials can be
quarantined before reshelving. We are not asking for the doors to be
reopened to patrons, just curbside service.

As a retired educator and librarian, I have watched how the digital divide
prevented K-12 schools from reaching all kids during the past months. We
can't let the summer start without giving those kids without electronic
access, and adults, access to reading materials.

Please advocate for immediate curbside service with the Governor, local
leaders, and even your TV news stations! Reading is "essential."

Thank you for listening!

Just so I'm clear, this order pertains to curbside services too, right?

Even in regions 6 and 8? Still no curbside service? It's all so confusing.
Now you can go to a bar in Elk Rapids but you can't pick up a book outside
the library.
