During COVID, this service has been invaluable to our Film teacher. His students were able to use their Orion Township Public Library card to access films on Kanopy. Without that, he has no idea what he would have done when all the students needed to watch the same film during the same week.

I realize that doesn't answer most of your questions, but I felt the need to let you know our experience.

I'm a Kanopy user rather than a public librarian, but what I have to say may be useful. I have Kanopy now on my Roku choices, but I never added it. The access apparently comes from the Huntington Woods Public Library, and I get 10 views per period, which I believe to be a month. When I asked about this before on this list since Anne Hage, HWPL library director wasn't sure how this happened, someone speculated that I got it because I had installed the "Library Extension" for Chrome. I also have this extension tell me if any book I search on Amazon is available from my public library.

I find this automatic Kanopy access very handy because I couldn't get Kanopy to work on Roku when I tried to do it on my own. I could access films on my computer but couldn't configure things to work correctly on my TV. If I'm remembering correctly, I had to acquire some code on my PC each time I wanted to watch a film. This surprise installation just works and doesn't require any code or password. Roku also searches Kanopy whenever I'm trying to find a movie.

As a retired Wayne State Library Science professor, I know that the WSU libraries had to limit access to Kanopy because the heavy use for recreational viewing was costing too much. The instructor needs to file out a form to justify class use before Kanopy becomes available. I don't know if such automatic installations as the one I have now at home will pose the same problems for public libraries.

Dear Public Library Directors,

If you subscribe to kanopy.com, what has been your response? It is popular? What is the cost per film or does it vary? Is it user friendly and easily accessible?
