LIBRARY DIRECTOR

Job Description

Description


The library director is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and
coordinating all library functions. The work involves carrying out library
policy as determined by the Board of Directors. The Alanson Area Public
Library is a Level 3 library located in northern Michigan, serving a
semi-rural population.

 

Responsibilities

. Management 

o        Discharge the policies of the library and report to the Board, 
recommend needed policies, inform Board of library legislation at 
State and Federal level, assist with long-range planning, and provide 
technical assistance. 

o       Assume all administrative functions: oversee general operation of 

adult, young adult, genealogy and children's services. 

o       Maintain circulation system 

o       Compile statistics for program attendance, circulation, overdues 

o       Maintain local contracts 

o       Purchase equipment and supplies 

o       Respond to mail 

o       Accept, acknowledge, and track donations and gifts 

o       Create and arrange for displays 

o       Oversee building security and facility maintenance

 

. Supervisory 

o       Recruit, recommend, supervise and evaluate library staff. 

o       Schedule staff and volunteers 

o       Arrange for training and staff development. 

o       Expect and maintain a high quality of work and harmonious relations 
among staff, patrons, and Board 

o       Implement personnel policies 

o       Maintain payroll information 

 

. Collection 

o        Supervise collection development 

o        Evaluate and maintain library collections based on the AAPL 

Collection Development Policy 

o        Read reviews, select and purchase materials 

o        Catalogue, create records, and process new materials 

o        Remove and withdraw items as necessary 

 

 

 

 

 

. Community 

o Develop and maintain an active program of services and events 
o . Recommend and direct library programs 

o        Schedule library programs and outside group use of facility 

oEvaluate changing community needs 
. Communication 

o        Work with the Friends of the Library to raise funds to augment
library 

services 

o        Promote the library 

o        Represent the library and speak to local organizations 

o        Maintain an active program of public relations using local news 
media, newsletters and brochures, and the Internet. 

. Fiscal 

o        Maintain Library finances 

o        Work with the Board Treasurer to prepare the State Aid form 

o        Prepare bills, petty cash, and receipt reports 

o        Oversee grants 

 

. Professional Development 

o        Maintain local, state, district and professional affiliations 

o        Prepare regular reports for the Board of Directors 

o        Attend library conferences, meetings, workshops 

o        Read professional journals 

o        Make use of services and consultants of Superiorland Cooperative 

o        All other related work as required 

o  Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor 

. Standards of Performance 

o Yearly evaluation by the Board of Directors

Other Requirements

 

o    Possess at least a Level 3 Certificate from the Library of Michigan (or
qualify to complete one); which entails holding at least a Bachelor's degree
from an accredited college or university, and the completion of the Library
Director Beginning Workshop within one year of appointment.

o     Pay scale $34,000-$36,000, based on experience; paid vacation,
holidays and sick days.
