The American Library Association (ALA) Nominating Committee had the charge to consider applications for up to 50 potential nominations to Councilor's role at Large. The submissions pool has yielded 49 candidates and will proceed with the election for 33 seats to honor those who have chosen to stand for election during this challenging time. Longlist for 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction announced<https://bit.ly/2HB3R6a>
A total of 46 books (26 fiction, 20 nonfiction) has been selected for the longlist for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction. The six-title shortlist—three each for the fiction and nonfiction medals—will be chosen from longlist titles and announced on Nov. 17, 2020. The two medal winners will be announced by 2021 selection committee chair Bill Kelly at the Reference and User Services Association’s Book and Media Awards (BMAs) event, which will take place online on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2021, 3-4 p.m. CST. American Libraries has changed the name of its monthly podcast from Dewey Decibel to Call Number with American Libraries.
After consulting with the American Libraries Advisory Committee, staff decided to change the podcast name to distance the magazine from the legacy of Melvil Dewey (1851–1931), a founder of the American Library Association (ALA) and inventor of the Dewey Decimal Classification system, who was eventually ostracized by ALA as a result of what one librarian of the period called his “outrages against decency.” Read more<http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2020/10/american-libraries-changes-podcast-name>

Friends of the Library groups from all over the country marked the 15th annual National Friends of Libraries Week Oct. 18-24. Even while facing the challenges of their library buildings being closed, or open for limited hours, Friends groups continued to advocate for their libraries by promoting their groups, hosting virtual events and fundraisers, and showing appreciation for library staff and boards. For the third year in a row, the Public Library Association (PLA) has developed and released an Early Literacy Calendar, featuring daily literacy-building activities that libraries can share with families in their community.
These bright and colorful calendars are downloadable and reproducible. Based on the Every Child Ready to Read practices of reading, writing, singing, talking, playing, and counting, each download contains twelve months of learning activities, book lists, nursery rhymes, and more.
