The Tamarack District Library Board of Trustees is accepting resumes for the position of Library Director. This position is full-time and will include some evening and weekend hours.  

Tamarack District Library was established on October 14, 2002 by Lakeview Community Schools,  Cato Township, Hinton Township, and Pine Township in Montcalm County, Michigan, and serves both students and the community, a population of 10,250 in 206 square miles. The library is a single branch  in a 15,000 square foot facility built in 2008 in the Village of Lakeview with one full-time and six part time staff and is a member of the Lakeland Library Cooperative. Tamarack District Library has strong community support, a fully engaged Friends of the Library group, a budget of $429,000.  

The Village of Lakeview is conveniently located near the intersection of M-46 and M-91, 12 miles east  of the US-131 expressway and thirty-one miles west of US-127.  

The successful Director candidate will be an approachable, competent individual who brings innovative ideas, a willingness to interact with the community, and who values internal and external customer service. The candidate should have an understanding of the needs of a small community and an innovative vision for the Library going forward.  

EXPECTATIONS: 

The Director provides leadership to the staff, recognizing the value and strengths of each individual and utilizing those strengths to create a team atmosphere and to enhance service to the public. The Director is the public face of the Library and reports to the Board of Trustees, working in partnership with the Board to ensure that the library fulfills its mission and creates strategies for future success, as well as being accountable for programming and fiscal integrity of the Library. The Director works with considerable independence, subject to Board policies and directives, but shall show resourcefulness,  initiative, creativity, and mature judgment in performance of duties. The Director will attend meetings  associated with membership in the Lakeland Library Cooperative and workshops which will require travel. Reliable transportation is essential.

A performance review based on the job description will be conducted by the Library Board 3, 6, and 9 months from the date of hire. Thereafter, yearly performance reviews will be conducted.  

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 Minimum of 4-year bachelor’s degree  
 Michigan State Certification or eligibility for certification as library director of a Class III Public Library, with certification to be completed within one year from the date that certification workshops again become available  
 Library experience and professional knowledge of library practices, procedures, and technology  helpful  
 Knowledge of public library administrative principles and practices, human resources, and  library law helpful  
 Demonstrated administrative, management, and fiscal ability  
 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, Board of Trustees,  community organizations, and the public  
 Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion, and to lead and provide direction
 Excellent oral and written communication skills   
SALARY/BENEFITS: 

$50,000 – $60,000 salary negotiable, based on qualifications and experience
