Hi Dennis,
If you're looking for archival quality, preservation-grade digitization equipment, the Spirit 2K datacine is a great choice for small gauge film. Alternatively, LaserGraphics makes small gauge datacines in various models. These are not inexpensive (running in the tens of thousands of dollars) if ordered new, but you said if money was no object! I sometimes see Spirits on eBay, so it's definitely worth checking around if you decide to go with commercial grade equipment.
Just a reminder to always hand wind the full film to inspect it for failing splices or damaged sprockets before running the film, which may be a reason for the Wolverine stopping abruptly.
I'd love to know more about what equipment other libraries in Michigan have and how they are using it, so please feel free to share what information you gather if it's off list with me as I get a better picture for Michigan's digitization landscape.
I hope this is helpful and don't hesitate to reach out with any other questions!

Subject: [Michlib-l] Digitization Lab equipment question
CAUTION: This is an External email. Please send suspicious emails to abuse at michigan.gov
For those libraries around the state that offer Digitization Labs to their residents/cardholders like our library (Dearborn Public Library) does, do you convert reel-to-reel 8mm film (video) to digital format? If so, what equipment are you using to do the conversion? Are you satisfied with its reliability?
We offered the service for the few patrons who brought in 8mm/Super8 film reels, but recently had to suspend converting that format due to the unreliability of the hardware we are using (Wolverine unit for about $300 that only accepts 3”-5” reels, not 7” or larger). It would keep stopping and have to be restarted, even if the reels were visibly in great condition.
Do any libraries out there have other brands of 8mm/Super8 film converters that are more commercial grade as opposed to consumer grade? If money were no option, what would you like to purchase that you don’t have?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
