Re: New equity and social justice principle added to ALA  Code of Ethics

I stand by the long-overdue update to the ALA Code of Ethics. Our job as
librarians is to uphold the truth, and the truth is that this county was
founded on the oppression and subjugation of non-white people. This basic
premise (proved beyond a shadow of a doubt through primary source materials
and almost any history book) has impacted every subsequent generation that
grows up or immigrates to America -- especially people of color but
specifically Black and indigenous people.

In 2021, It blows me away that we continue to argue about it in libraries
instead of doing something about it. Library workers and librarians are
predominantly white. The statistics are staggering, and it's our collective
problem to address and fix.

I'd also like to respectfully disagree with the idea that by acknowledging
these basic truths about what people of color have endured in our
communities, we are limiting the views of those on the opposite side of the
aisle. This isn't about political ideologies. It's about the truth and
facts. Libraries have historically catered to white communities much more
than to Black ones. I encourage you all to read up on the history of
segregation in public libraries.

Finally: I moved to Michigan from South Carolina two years ago. I live in
Detroit but work in the suburbs. Southeast Michigan is far more segregated
than anywhere I've visited or lived during my first 33 years of life in the
South. I would love to see TLN create a committee or group to address this.
It's something I would be happy to be a part of.
