Hello fellow Michigan libraries!
I know my library is not alone in occasionally finding our storage shelves
and areas overwhelmed with books that we desperately need to 'move on',
such as discarded collection items or items that have been in multiple book
sales and are still without a home.
My library has had a great experience using a company called GFL (Green for
Life Recycling), that I would like to recommend to others seeking a
solution to this perpetual conundrum. The GFL facility accepts and recycles
books, both hardcover and softcover, and does not require customers to
screen items or remove covers in order to recycle.
There are several different options for recycling books via GFL, including
drop-off facilities (where you can drive up w/o an appointment and load
books into boxes), trailer drop offs/pick-ups, and box drop offs/pick-ups.
My library recently used the 'box' option, which entailed GFL bringing
large cardboard boxes (pallet-sized) and pallets right to our location (on
a date and time that we chose) where we assembled them and filled them with
our recycled books. They then came and picked them up at a later time (we
scheduled ours for the very next morning). This service (for our location)
was priced at just $100 'per pick-up', and one 'pick-up' can receive a
maximum of 10 boxes (large, pallet-sized boxes).
I have included the link below to their main website. I am unsure of what
'service area' limits they have (which may impact pricing for this same
service that we scheduled) but our experience with them has been fantastic,
and I wish I had known about their services sooner. The representatives I
worked with were professional and attentive, and made the entire process go
smoothly and painlessly. I hope this information can be helpful to another
library!
Thank you everyone, and have a great weekend!
