"A library, like other neighborhood anchors, can shift the economics of a new broadband deployment toward viable by bringing cost-effective bandwidth into the neighborhood to be distributed locally." -Joanne Hovis
Join in TOMORROW, Friday to help get things started for 2021 as we look back and especially FORWARD to the coming months of change and challenge.

We'll hear from Benton Institute Sr. Fellow, Jon Sallet, co-author of "If We Build It, Will They Come? Lessons from Open-Access, Middle-Mile Networks"
Jon Sallet returns to give us a look at a top infrastructure policy recommendation that would underpin any effort to finally close the US digital access divide. We'll hear how well this approach has worked and discuss opportunities for libraries to partner with fellow anchor institutions in preparation for a new national infrastructure rebuilding effort.
Jordan Arnold, Research Associate with Benton, "Open-access, middle-mile networks can support connections to multiple categories of customers, from libraries to residences."
Joanne Hovis, President of CTC Technology<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgiglibraries.us4.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D6dc7f62bf2785cc68a03a6c8d%26id%3Ddddad028ba%26e%3D2cb2b11ed8&data=04%7C01%7CWhiteS29%40michigan.gov%7Ce967c46f7cf747cc1af208d8b310424b%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637456229708761625%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=7B0tPPX%2FXim5rVqG0TmWXhVxGo%2Fd%2FKPrk3yZhEPjXls%3D&reserved=0>, is a recognized authority on broadband markets and on the evolving role of public-private partnerships in the provision of communications services to the public.
"Perhaps no one has more experience in how communities can come together in common purpose to plan and build their own future with critical telecomm infrastructure, than Joanne Hovis." -Don Means
"'Middle-mile' networks reach from national and major regional internet backbones to a local connection site (which could be a school or library but which could not be, by definition, a residence)." -- Report, Dec. 1, 2020<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgiglibraries.us4.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D6dc7f62bf2785cc68a03a6c8d%26id%3D8a5d462a09%26e%3D2cb2b11ed8&data=04%7C01%7CWhiteS29%40michigan.gov%7Ce967c46f7cf747cc1af208d8b310424b%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637456229708771581%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=IT9Yjkp7KnjD164My%2F6juiJyptyi0GoPrOBf1bu4%2Fmg%3D&reserved=0>
How does this approach benefit libraries and how can they participate or advocate in building them?
