Honoring Humanities Work Throughout Michigan

Dear Humanities Friends,

Kicking off a new year, especially after a challenging one, makes me mindful of courage. Winston Churchill said, “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” At Michigan Humanities, we take the art of civil conversation seriously, and look forward to expanding our work with young people through the Kathleen S. Mullins Emerging Leaders Program<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0010G4rHQ47ZfQMJPdKd75jzE6E5BUAmZjofj7D7gZGIEptJDN6-fG8XTqeMoyGpCVV7PVcrHcpIviIKb6C2TOBTPRgpmVOWUbNE4fMnIaLbx8RFwzKEjhiwClMq5A28c0Jz6LZVLXuWUWxdQN450aDqqIvu99hcnl6v_6xRsw4K-Z4ENRBx1rvdyBf3EMZPPn_4-hceMRFTGcI9BSMVb6IzUGjFbiK1_ou&c=pj9IArFDxC1CxlqpS495nvr3YQWpAlfZVsmu32xcL7fosYharVXCZA==&ch=fNjN5eDSzfrMZM5FZ6UstB_UAvG7hfyeGDvyZ607noB9QOC3sf4Bvw==> to strengthen and nurture conversational skills.

What could be more important to our democracy than the ability to learn from one another, to be courageous in reaching out to all sides, and to find ways to build peace and solutions that benefit us all? As a longtime Rotarian, I learned the value of the four-way test. Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Asking these questions takes courage in a world full of coarse ideas and intolerance.

Our MH team -- Board members and staff alike -- strive to provide quality programming and grant funding to support the hard work of communities seeking greater understanding and cultural connections. Thank you for being a part of this work. We couldn’t be more enthusiastic, optimistic, and purposeful in our plans for 2021!

We hope you enjoy this month's newsletter. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time to share your humanities ideas.

What makes community life worthwhile? Is it the relationships you build over time with family, friends, and co-workers? What about the good times and memories from attending annual festivals and events? Or is it the experience of working through difficult times that bonds us together?
