YALSA
YALSA Research Survey
The YALSA Research Committee invites your participation in a survey<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VNX86WZ> that connects the current YALSA National Research Agenda<http://www.ala.org/yalsa/guidelines/research/researchagenda> to pandemic-related challenges with the current Agenda's priority areas in practice by library staff working directly with youth. More specifically we are looking to assess how the pandemic has impacted library practitioner's ability to focus on the priority areas in order to examine strengths and gaps for a future agenda. This survey<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VNX86WZ> is completely voluntary and anonymous.

The Newbery Medal: Past, Present and Future<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ala.org%2Falsc%2Fnewbery-medal-past-present-and-future&data=04%7C01%7CLancasterC5%40michigan.gov%7C5fca8a4613e3430c7e8608d9312c071a%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637594887436615294%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=DMc0AxuwD2NzBQ1Hw%2BfgvEjWaYf%2FpLUuHfc5vUH7%2BNA%3D&reserved=0> asks: What does it mean when we recommend Newbery Award winners to children in our communities? Should the Newbery seal of approval stand for 100 years? Why is that gold medal often considered the 'kiss of death' by kids? How can we help parents and teachers understand what the Newbery Medal is - and is not? Participants will gain a solid grounding in the history of the Newbery Medal and how it has changed over time; an opportunity to read, discuss and consider past and present Newbery winners with colleagues; a change to talk with former Newbery Committee members and a Newbery author, and suggestions for programming using Newbery-winning books. This course is offered as part of the ALSC Newbery 100 Celebration<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ala.org%2Falsc%2Fawardsgrants%2Fbookmedia%2Fnewbery%2FNewbery100&data=04%7C01%7CLancasterC5%40michigan.gov%7C5fca8a4613e3430c7e8608d9312c071a%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637594887436615294%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=NlMj32Thv%2FY3aBb%2BTjMHueex3IAjPldw%2B4r7q2tjvpo%3D&reserved=0>; it is taught by KT Horning, Director of the Cooperative Children's Book Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and author of From Cover to Cover: Evaluating and Reviewing Children's Books. KT has taught numerous courses for ALSC over the years, including classes on the Newbery and Caldecott Awards.
Utilizing the Competencies to Boost Skills and Services<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ala.org%2Falsc%2Futilizing-competencies-boost-skills-and-services&data=04%7C01%7CLancasterC5%40michigan.gov%7C5fca8a4613e3430c7e8608d9312c071a%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637594887436625262%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=Zu7cUvDa1iK00CBETS9qgb4r%2F6RC2tReGhtvbZ6w%2BN0%3D&reserved=0> is a highly reflective course designed to help participants explore applications of the 2020 Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Libraries. The course will focus on finding ways to demonstrate competence in the field, strategically plan library services using the competencies, action steps to put new competency-aligned practices into place, and creating artifacts to strengthen professional portfolios. The course will not cover each competency in-depth, but rather focus on the key competency areas, and is designed to offer both instructor- and student-led peer activities to draw on areas of expertise and support learners in areas needing development. The course instructor is Amanda Yother, EdD candidate at The University of Memphis and former co-chair of the ALSC Education Committee, where she oversaw the 2020 revision of the ALSC Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Libraries. She has a decade of professional experience in public libraries, school libraries and library training and development.

Citizen Science Tails and Summer Tales<https://blog.scistarter.org/featured-projects/citizen-science-tails-and-summer-tales/>
CSLP's partners at the NNLM put me in contact with an organization they work with, SciStarter. They are: "a globally acclaimed, online citizen science hub where more than 3,000 projects, searchable by location, topic, age level, etc, have been registered by individual project leaders or imported through partnerships with federal governments, NGOs, and universities."
To help support CSLP libraries this summer, and help make citizen science content easily available, they have put together a Tails and Tales themed blog/newsletter: https://blog.scistarter.org/featured-projects/citizen-science-tails-and-summer-tales/. They will be sharing great programming ideas throughout the summer!

The MI Diaries<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mi-diaries.org%2F&data=04%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7C7f5d82c3ae134ad8d99c08d92f48d637%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637592812900054875%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000&sdata=nTGMlBaHkl%2BSQPQImaJvBGPubQoEEBNKPkDmG1TIDm8%3D&reserved=0> project, run by Michigan State's Sociolinguistics Lab, is looking to connect with local libraries this summer!
We have been collecting "audio diaries" from Michiganders ages 3+ since April 2020, and will keep collecting them throughout the next few years as well. The project sends out weekly diary prompts, and diarists self-record their answers or anything they want to talk about into our app (for iOS<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapps.apple.com%2Fus%2Fapp%2Fmi-diaries%2Fid1525241983&data=04%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7C7f5d82c3ae134ad8d99c08d92f48d637%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637592812900054875%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000&sdata=ZEV0vQhXLzYFnwNHOFpiitIwXzQ00ybfWaslnl17xw8%3D&reserved=0> and Android<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fplay.google.com%2Fstore%2Fapps%2Fdetails%3Fid%3Dedu.msu.midiaries%26hl%3Den_US%26gl%3DUS&data=04%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7C7f5d82c3ae134ad8d99c08d92f48d637%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637592812900064822%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000&sdata=%2Fr6mjxq1Zg7LZFAOTIzaBiLx93lSJeGREbruAujT6t8%3D&reserved=0>). These diaries will help us understand how Michiganders' lives and language are changing! Anyone living in Michigan ages 3+ is eligible to become a diarist. Diarists can choose to opt-in to our partnership with the Library of Michigan, and we will share their anonymized recordings to the library's LM Digital<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flmdigital.libraryofmichigan.org%2Fabout-lm-digital-collections&data=04%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7C7f5d82c3ae134ad8d99c08d92f48d637%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637592812900064822%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000&sdata=OHWPyZfrBhx4anTwP1tuEZB8ftkHSeqAdJJSi5N5SoE%3D&reserved=0> platform, for future Michiganders to access. Diarists can also earn Amazon gift cards for participating ($5 every 2 weeks, if they submit at least 15 minutes of audio diary).
