[A picture containing text, clipart, sign Description automatically generated]In 2018 the Michigan Department of Education published the Michigan Career Development Model<https://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/MI_Career_Development_Model_-_Dec._18_2018_641266_7.pdf> with the goal of providing students the necessary knowledge and skills for success in a career of their choice. While there are several focus areas for students in 11th and 12th grade, Target 3: Career Preparation encourages students to “Continue to build knowledge about careers, education, and employment opportunities.” Among the suggested strategies:
* Internships
* How to job search
* Soft skills/work ethics
The Job & Career Accelerator<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=PSjca> resource inside LearningExpress Library<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=lex> has lessons that speak directly to these strategies through the Search for Jobs & Internships resource. In addition to offering the Indeed USA Job Search, Indeed USA Internship Search, and the Federal Job Search databases, there is also a very well-developed, up-to-date set of lessons under the Find Your Next Job feature:
Lesson 1: The Modern-Day Job Search
* Digital Information
* Creating Your Personal Brand
* Researching Your Industry, Jobs, & Potential Employers
* Skill Building
* The Power of Networking
Lesson 2: Finding a Job A to Z
* Online Search Engines
* Federal Resources
* Job Fairs and Career Centers
* Agencies and Recruiters
* Transitioning from Military Service
Lesson 3: Using Social Media for Professional Development
* Recruiters and Employers Care about Social Media
* Building a Career-Focused Community
* Useful Knowledge at Your Fingertips
* Why LinkedIn Matters Most
* Behance, Instagram, Facebook, Medium, & Twitter
* Staying Positive and Productive
Glassdoor, TaskRabbit, Fiverr, Craigslist, Upwork, Monster
Along with great tips and some fantastic skill building around career preparation, there are also many snippets of research that are emphasized in these lessons. For example, “According to a 2018 CareerBuilder survey, 70% of employers use social media to screen candidates during the hiring process, and about 43% use it to see what current employees are up to online.” Another strength of this resource is that it speaks to understanding salary levels and walks the user through websites such as Glassdoor, TaskRabbit, Fiverr, Craigslist, Upwork, and Monster.
If you are seeking some exceptional learning about career preparation, then you cannot go wrong with the lessons found within the Search for Jobs & Internships field of Job & Career Accelerator in LearningExpress Library. You must first create an account in LearningExpress Library to access all the content, but once you do, then the lessons, courses, practice tests, occupation cards, eBooks, flashcards and tutorials you download will be saved for later retrieval.
