[A picture containing text, clipart, sign Description automatically generated]If there is one eResource provided through the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> that rises to the top in its support of the Michigan Academic Standards for K-2 Social Studies<https://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/Final_Social_Studies_Standards_Document_655968_7.pdf>, it is hands down PebbleGo<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=pebblego> Social Studies. Not only is there content that builds upon the kindergarten lens of Myself and Others, the 1st grade lens of School and Families, and the 2nd grade lens of Local Community, but there are also built-in accessibility features such as text to speech, images, video clips, and maps that give all learners many opportunities to be successful in their comprehension and understanding.

The articles in PebbleGo<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=pebblego> are presented in short, digestible snippets available online or in printable PDF format. Simple citation for each article gives students their first blush of understanding primary versus secondary resources, important to Dimension 3 in the K-2 Arc of Inquiry: Evaluating Sources and Using Evidence. Understanding their evidence pushes them forward to constructing and communicating claims for a variety of purposes and audiences, integral to fulfilling Dimension 4: Communicating Conclusions and Taking Informed Action.

Beyond the Arc of Inquiry, the content available in PebbleGo<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=pebblego> Social Studies helps students learn about the social studies disciplines: history, geography, civics and government, and economics. Below, I've listed a handful of academic standards for kindergarten through 2nd grade that can be supported with this MeL eResource:

Kindergarten

K - G1.0.1 Recognize that maps and globes represent places.

K - C2.0.1 Identify the American flag as an important symbol of the United Tates.

K - E1.0.2 Distinguish between goods and services.

1st Grade

1 - H2.0.5 Identify the events or people celebrated during U.S. national holidays and why we celebrate them.

1 - C2.0.2 Identify important symbols of the United States of America and what they represent.

1 - G4.0.1 Use components of culture to describe diversity in family life.

2nd Grade

2 - G5.0.2 Describe positive and negative consequences of changing the physical environment of the local community.

2 - C5.0.2 Distinguish between personal and civic responsibilities and explain why they are important in community life.

2 - E1.0.2 Describe how businesses in the local community meet economic wants of consumers.

With its images and interactive content, PebbleGo fulfills learning standards in a fun and engaging manner. If you would like to schedule free training for your library or school district on this or other MeL eResources, please contact us at https://mcls.org/melrequest.
