2023 TALK STORY GRANT AVAILABLE
Applications being accepted for Talk Story: Sharing Stories, Sharing Culture, a family literacy initiative that connects Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and American Indian communities across generations. The Talk Story grant celebrates and explores Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and American Indian stories through books, oral traditions, and cultural arts to provide interactive and enriching experiences for all ages. This grant provides financial support to libraries and community organizations who are motivated to promote intergenerational literacy through programming, services, and collections. Talk Story programs may be conducted in-person or virtually. Talk Story is in its fourteenth year of partnership between the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and the American Indian Library Association (AILA). Applications are due by March 15, 2023. Take Your Child to the Library Day is held annually on the first Saturday of February. To celebrate, libraries across the country and around the world welcome families with programs, activities, and special events. Since 2011, more than 1,400 libraries have participated, serving a population area of 48.7 million people, and drawing attention to the importance of the library in the lives of children.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common supports. This is a 2-hour self-paced course, combined with a 6-hour instructor led virtual course* and uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia.   *   Share basic early childhood brain science to help you make the connection between Storytime activities and your young patron's growing brains.
  *   Review the Ready to Read Five Practices and give participants a plethora of program ideas for each of the five practices to use right away.
  *   Introduce a Template that will help you include the five practices in your Storytime plans.
  *   Discuss our role as Language and Literacy Mentors for parents and caregivers.

Attend either date above and bring your summer program ideas, no matter the age group to share at our virtual round tables. Participants are encouraged to bring at least one program idea to share with the group. Program ideas may or may not be related to the CSLP theme "All Together Now," and can be geared for any age, including teens & adults. We want to hear what your library is up to and what you're excited about! We will also have the opportunity to discover all of the exciting ways the Michigan Learning Channel (MLC) and PBS Kids can support engagement and learning in your community this summer. See a sampling of the MLC summer program resources, including specific All Together Now themed activities and resources, on-demand videos and hands-on activities from a variety of local, regional, and national educational partners, and ideas for in-person events and programming provided by the MLC engagement team.
Attendees of this round table will walk away with ideas and contacts to customize the summer program for your community. These virtual round tables will not be recorded.
