[Michlib-l] Livonia Public Library to host award-winning author Scott Ellsworth on Tues, March 8

Livonia Public Library invites you to join us for a conversation with award-winning writer Scott Ellsworth via Zoom on Tuesday, March 8 at 7pm. Scott will discuss his newest book, The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice, which tells the riveting story of the Tulsa Race Massacre.

In less than 24 hours in the spring of 1921, over 1000 homes and businesses in Tulsa's Greenwood District--once known as "Black Wall Street"--were looted, burned and bombed from the air in the worst single incident of racial violence in American history.  Thousands of Black residents were left homeless and hundreds were injured; the number of dead remains unknown.  The history of this horrific event was systematically suppressed for decades, until courageous individuals fought to bring it to light.  The Ground Breaking tells the story of the massacre, unearths the history of how it was covered up, and recounts the ongoing efforts to identify victims and provide justice for survivors and their families.

The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice was longlisted for both the National Book Award and the Carnegie Medal. We will be giving away at random one signed copy of the book to a program attendee.
