Oceans of TRPG Possibilities
By Christine Martin-Resotko, Capital Area District Libraries - Mason, MI

Last year, I talked about how Tabletop Role Playing Game (TRPG) events can be great for summer reading. For most themes, the ideas are easy to come by. This year, the question is how do you tie in the concepts of oceans and underwater. I have a couple ideas for you.

This system is SUPER easy to learn and is a great game for kids through adults. Here is how you make it work for our 2022 theme. First, watch the My Little Pony Movie. Really, go borrow it from your library and watch it. See those? The Sea Ponies and Seaquestria. That is what you use! Time for a Sea Pony adventure! Using the Tails of Equestria Official Movie Source book, you can find information on Seaquestria and Sea Ponies. The adventure can just be regular Sea Ponies, or you could let your players make their own characters and have them be transformed by the Pearl of Transformation. What underwater beasts can be threatening Seaquestria now? Find out this summer at your local library!

The is "romantic" like Mercedes Lackey or Diane Duane fantasy novels, not like the romance section of the library. It is an egalitarian society working toward justice for all and for those you care for. This game is great for older teens and adults. There is also some flexibility because you can either use the Blue Rose 2nd edition rules with the AGE system by Green Ronin, or you can get the new Blue Rose Adventures for 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons. How does this work for our theme? Easy. First, there are the Sea Folk, a humanoid ancestry which gives many benefits to living and adventuring in the ocean. Second, there are the Rhy-fen, an awakened form of dolphin who live and work as equals with the Sea Folk and islanders. They communicate psychically with others and can have amazing sets of skills. Combine these two peoples and a boat and some unusual islands or submerged cities, and you have an adventure that really leans into that summer atmosphere.

There are lots of other ideas out there. Wizards of the Coast has the Ghosts of Saltmarsh adventure for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. If you have horror fans, you can't go wrong with some Call of Cthulhu and head to Innsmouth, Massachusetts for some creatures of the deep. Let your imagination run wild. Plumb the depths of the ocean for mysteries, creatures, horrors, and wonders. Who knows, you and your players may even discover a new Atlantis!

What "Tales" did your library have to tell for 2021? What "Possibilities" do you see for your library in 2022? Please send your photos, ideas, and any informative details to Luke Kralik at: luke.kralik at cslpreads.org<mailto:luke.kralik at cslpreads.org> I would love to share them in our newsletter.

Public libraries feed hungry bodies as well as hungry minds during the summer - and throughout the year. The CSLP's Child and Community Well-Being committee encourages library involvement in activities that support wellness, from summer and afterschool meals, to well-being programming, to support for basic needs, all to help children, teens, and communities stay nourished, active, and healthy when school is out. Kid's Gardening at the Library
The Lake Andes Public Library has planted a Kid's Garden for the past 7 years. As part of our Summer programming each year we dedicated one day a week to the garden. Lessons provide information on nutrition from the vegetables and fruits we grow, ways to cook/eat those items and of course eating the vegetables and fruit we grow in the garden. Lessons also are hands on in the garden with preparing the soil, planting the seeds or garden plants, weeding, watering, harvesting and protecting the pollinators that visit our garden. This year we are hoping to add preservation of our garden surplus.

I am happy to announce that the Lake Andes Public Library received a Kids Gardening grant for the 2022 season. This grant provides funding for items we may need for the garden, and also tools, seeds, fertilizer, curriculum package, a mushroom growing kit, watering hoses, and various other items. This grant will be the kick start we needed to improve upon our garden, as we will be moving to a different library site in the near future. We plan to use the funding provided to purchase grow lights for the library so children can start seedlings indoors before transplanting outdoors when weather allows.
If your Library would be interested in pursuing a Gardening grant the website for grant info is:
