Librarian 1 - Local History and Genealogy - Full-time

The Public Libraries of Saginaw seeks a collaborative, self-motivated, tech-savvy professional for the position of Librarian 1 in the Local History and Genealogy (LHG) department located at the historic Hoyt Library.  LHG collects and preserves the history of the people, organizations and businesses of Saginaw, with extensive, rich archival collections and an active local history and research community.  LHG serves as a regional genealogy center, working closely with the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History.  The collection also includes rare books, historic maps and one of the largest collections of genealogy materials.

This is a key role for the Public Libraries of Saginaw.  The librarian works with a team with the support and guidance of the Branch Head.  This full-time position is responsible for providing direct public service to library patrons, processing and promoting archival collections, maintaining and developing relationships with community partners and developing and presenting programming related to local history and genealogy.  This position has a focus on digital archive services including digitization, born-digital archiving and web archiving.  Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong interest in archival work, local history, genealogy and archives.  Preferably applicants will be able to demonstrate customer service experience, public speaking skills, an organized work process and experience contributing to a positive team environment.

Education and Experience
*        ALA Accredited MLS
*        Knowledge of modern archive and library principles, professional methods, practices and techniques
*        Knowledge of library resources, services, policies and procedures
*        On-going training is encouraged
Language Skills
*        Possess excellent written and oral communication skills
*        Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with staff, vendors and general public
Computer Skills
*        Proficiency in the use of technology for archive and library work including the ability to access and utilize digital resources and software applications
*        Extensive experience with on-line searching for reference resources
Certificates
*        Library of Michigan Level 2 Certification
*        Graduate Certificate in Archival Management preferred
Other Skills and Qualifications
*        Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, set priorities and communicate progress
*        Must work well under stress, be flexible and deal comfortably with change
*        Ability to work accurately, methodically and with great attention to detail
*        Possess the ability to work independently and collaboratively
*        Excellent organizational skills
*        Ability to contribute to a positive team environment

This position pays a salary of $47,947 - $60,416 in six annual steps.  Benefits include health insurance, life insurance, and pro-rated vacation, sick leave and personal business time.
