MARCH 2022

President's Message

In the past several months, there has been a dramatic increase in challenges to library materials, programs, and access in school and public libraries. Adverse legislation is increasing in several states that would limit curriculum in classrooms and access in libraries - some would even remove longstanding legal protections that shield libraries and library workers from criminal prosecution for providing access to books and online resources to minors.

We at United for Libraries are working to support all libraries in their efforts to fight censorship and support intellectual freedom. The United for Libraries Intellectual Freedom Task Force has organized a two-part webinar, "Keeping Governance on Track<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Famericanlibraryassociation.informz.net%2Fz%2FcjUucD9taT0xMDQ4NzUwNCZwPTEmdT0xMTE5ODUxMzIzJmxpPTkzMzczOTgw%2Findex.html&data=04%7C01%7Cwhites29%40michigan.gov%7Cf2e9738be42c479191af08da02b6ac64%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637825281286929134%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=51xFsyt%2BlbxaRGaqyVjD2M57hF8xDlvaPE2NRmcYDZQ%3D&reserved=0>," that will be presented by the United for Libraries Intellectual Freedom Task Force on March 29 and 31. These webinars will be free to all, thanks to a bequest from the late Jack Neal. More information is below - please register and spread the word.

In addition, the task force has launched two resources to support Trustees and libraries to prepare for program, material, and access challenges: "Terms and Definitions Related to Intellectual Freedom & Censorship<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Famericanlibraryassociation.informz.net%2Fz%2FcjUucD9taT0xMDQ4NzUwNCZwPTEmdT0xMTE5ODUxMzIzJmxpPTkzMzczOTgx%2Findex.html&data=04%7C01%7Cwhites29%40michigan.gov%7Cf2e9738be42c479191af08da02b6ac64%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637825281286929134%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=JqeEn7dwvHvGRm4adgGi1j%2FFK9x%2FKMvc7nvEdB4Go7c%3D&reserved=0>" and "Materials Challenges: Key Library Policies to Review and Revise<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Famericanlibraryassociation.informz.net%2Fz%2FcjUucD9taT0xMDQ4NzUwNCZwPTEmdT0xMTE5ODUxMzIzJmxpPTkzMzczOTgy%2Findex.html&data=04%7C01%7Cwhites29%40michigan.gov%7Cf2e9738be42c479191af08da02b6ac64%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C637825281286929134%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=zLEfa8IKA5Kx27p%2Fc3YyTcQo%2F3QU%2FKPAsOW0gzBFixo%3D&reserved=0>".

Free 'Keeping Governance on Track' webinars March 29 and 31

[Nancy Sylvester]

Library boards are facing an increase in disruptions during board meetings, often making it difficult to conduct necessary board business. With the rise in challenges to library materials and programs, boards can be impacted internally (conflict/dissent among board members) and externally (public comment and disruptions from meeting observers).
