The City of Irving (Texas) Public Library<https://cityofirving.org/1054/Library> seeks a new Library Director - someone ready to work and succeed with this incredible opportunity. With three library locations (two new since 2011) and one learning center, a staff of 104, and a $7 million annual budget, the successful candidate will work closely with external and internal stakeholders to shape a new library vision. The director will focus on a new library strategic plan and aligning the library to the community's needs for future library services and programs. Key opportunities include developing and implementing strategic goals, enhancing public access to new technologies, mentoring and coaching staff by creating staff development opportunities, and seeking new service delivery models. The library has excellent support from the Library Advisory Board, the Friends of the Library, and the City of Irving.
Irving, Texas is centrally located between Dallas and Fort Worth and is home to more than 256,684 residents. The city's thriving economy, combined with its proximity to the Dallas/Fort Worth International and Dallas Love Field airports, has made Irving a corporate powerhouse and an exciting place to live. The city's rich diversity is not only exhibited by its population or number of languages spoken by residents, but by the makeup of its business community. Irving is home to more than 8,500 local and multinational companies including four Fortune 1000 companies and eight Fortune 500 companies, which operate global headquarters in Irving. Approximately 70 percent of Irving's tax base is derived from commercial property and business activity, and the city's daytime population surpasses 300,000 throughout the week.
Irving's state-of-the-art transportation opportunities include two large airports, light and heavy rail, public bus services, as well as several major highways providing easy access to North Texas and beyond. Employment opportunities abound. In the last fiscal year, Irving saw 2,100 new jobs; 3,100 retained jobs; $306M in capital investment, and 13 corporate headquarters relocated to Irving. Irving offers the world-class Irving Arts Center that hosts live theater, ballet, and symphony performances, as well as national and local art exhibits. The Toyota Music Factory offers an 8,000-seat music hall that includes a 4,000-seat amphitheater and numerous dining and retail opportunities.
While Irving is in the center of a large metropolitan area, its beautiful green spaces - including exceptional golf courses and more than 80 parks on 1,868 park acres - beg for outdoor activity. Irving's Campion Trail offers exceptional golf courses, outdoor sporting facilities, and more than 15 miles of walkable, bikeable trail. Irving is the first city to share a major connection along the Trinity Trail System, a regional network that will ultimately span 250 miles and connect 16 counties across North Texas. The City of Irving is also home to six full-time recreation centers that offer a variety of indoor sports and children's programs, six aquatic centers, a dog park, lighted tennis courts, a youth activity center, and a senior activity center. Of Irving's 67.9 square miles of land area, more than 23-square miles are dedicated to master-planned developments and districts. These well-designed developments include Dallas Communications Complex, DFW Freeport, Freeport Center, Heritage Crossing District, Las Colinas, Valley Ranch, and multiple retail centers. Irving has more than 100 shopping centers and more than 500 restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. Residents are well served through the community's health care systems and educational opportunities abound. The city boasts four museums providing a variety of educational and cultural pursuits. Residents are served by Irving, Carrollton-Farmers Branch, and Coppell school districts, as well as a variety of private and parochial schools and academies. Irving also boasts three fully accredited institutions of higher learning: DeVry Institute of Technology, Dallas College North Lake Campus, and the University of Dallas. In addition, the city is within easy commuting distance to Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan College, Texas Woman's University, University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Arlington, and the University of Texas at Dallas.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Assistant City Manager, the Library Director plans, directs, and reviews the activities of the Library Services Department including the overall administrative functions at all locations. The director manages full- and part-time staff and manages the annual operating budget and capital improvement bond funds. Areas of responsibility include administrative management, fiscal management, personnel management, and space/facilities design and oversight. The director serves as a city department head and liaison to the community and works to establish positive collaborative relationships.
Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include a Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program and a minimum of seven years of library experience with five years of supervisory experience. The successful candidate also will have a demonstrated record of developing and mentoring staff, facilities management, implementing new library service models, an outstanding customer service philosophy, and successful community engagement. Experience working in a municipal environment is preferred.
Compensation: A starting salary range of $122,352-$147,432 (with placement negotiable, dependent upon experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package.
