  *   Decorating Together with CSLP State Representatives.

CSLP Child and Community Well-Being Committee Spotlight

In October, our community joined us for our Foul & Filthy Fest, and we had disgusting fun! Through this program, we took a different approach to get kids excited about learning healthy habits. The staff enjoyed these books and thought it would be entertaining and educational to have an event that was "gross." We wanted the party to be fun but also serve as an opportunity to share information about health and being healthy. Volunteers from the Dollar General Store joined us and helped with some of the many stations that were set up in the youth department. The library collaborated with the local Extension Office to provide some snacks that looked disgusting but tasted good. Some of the snacks the library provided included Cricket Bites and Larvets Original Worm Snax. At each station, we had books for checkout that talked about the importance of that "gross" thing. For example, we had a booger-bowling game, and at this station, we included books on the significance of snot. There was also a poo-throwing game with books about digestion and scat. A staff member created a cardboard toilet, and we purchased poop emoji toys for the kids to throw. Many families took pictures and videos of themselves trying bugs and drinking sodas, which was fun for everyone. If you are looking for a fun way to share health information, I highly recommend throwing a disgusting party.

Public libraries feed hungry bodies as well as hungry minds during the summer - and throughout the year. The CSLP's Child and Community Well-Being committee encourages library involvement in activities that support wellness, from summer and afterschool meals, to well-being programming, to support for basic needs, all to help children, teens, and communities stay nourished, active, and healthy when school is out.
