[A picture containing text, clipart, sign Description automatically generated]Michigan recognizes Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the second Monday in October. Home to the Anishinaabe people, known as Ojibwe, Odawa, and Bodéwadmi (Potawatomi), Michiganders can learn about Indigenous and Native culture by visiting cultural sites such as the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways<http://www.sagchip.org/ziibiwing/>, attending events like traditional Powwows, and learning from the Maawndoonganan: Anishinaabe Resource Manual<https://secureservercdn.net/198.71.233.202/021.ccf.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/AEUs_SSStandards_2021.final_.pdf> which accompanies the Michigan Social Studies Standards. Additionally, the Michigan eLibrary<https://www.mel.org/welcome> (MeL) provides journals and eBooks which can help everyone become more knowledgeable and inclusive.
NoveList Plus
NoveList Plus<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ebscoprofile-novplus> can help libraries promote Native and Indigenous characters and authors. One available tool is a guide that provides NoveList search strategies for Exploring Books by Culture<https://www.ebsco.com/sites/g/files/nabnos191/files/acquiadam-assets/NoveList-Search-Strategy-Books-by-Culture.pdf>. The NoveList staff has gathered information to assist with book and author discovery in their Explore Diversity Resources<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&encode=1&proxy=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=&target=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=neh&tg=UI&an=449732&site=novp-live> page. To feature Anishinaabe authors and characters, consider books by Louise Erdrich<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&encode=1&proxy=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=&target=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&bquery=AU+louise+erdrich&type=1&searchMode=And&site=novp-live>, Robin Wall Kimmerer<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&encode=1&proxy=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=&target=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&bquery=AU+Robin+Wall+Kimmerer&type=1&searchMode=And&site=novp-live>, Brenda Child<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&encode=1&proxy=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=&target=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&bquery=AU+brenda+child&type=1&searchMode=And&site=novp-live>, Carole Lindstrom<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&encode=1&proxy=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=&target=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&bquery=AU+Carole+Lindstrom&type=1&searchMode=And&site=novp-live>, and Cynthia Leitich Smith<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&encode=1&proxy=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=&target=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&bquery=AU+cynthia+leitich+smith&type=1&searchMode=And&site=novp-live>. It is also important to know that NoveList has undertaken a project to improve subject headings<https://www.ebsco.com/blogs/novelist/announcing-improved-subject-headings-relating-indigenous-cultures> that relate to Indigenous cultures.
