Position Summary
Under the direction of the Associate Director, the Public Experience & Desk Services Department Manager actively manages desk service and directs the work of supervisory staff in the Public Experience & Desk Services Department. The primary responsibility is overseeing the staffing of Public Desks, and ensuring consistently high-quality service. The Manager also plans, implements and coordinates departmental training. The Manager also serves as part of the Library’s management team, participates in strategic planning and various management meetings, and serves as spokesperson for desk service at the Library.
This position requires some evening and weekend hours.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties as assigned:
* Manages staffing, training, coaching, workload planning, staff development, supervision and evaluation of department staff.
* Acts as spokesperson for the department, and for library desk service.
* Coordinates ongoing departmental training and staff development.
* Recommends, develops and implements procedures, services, operations and programs based on sound analysis and thorough understanding of the organization and the community it serves.
* Provides active leadership for the organization.
* Participates in the development and management of departmental budget.
* Actively participates in system-wide planning, service development and continual process improvement.
* Actively participates as a member of the Library management team.
* Demonstrates a strong commitment to responsive and innovative service.
* Works to identify internal and external talent, and develop staff towards greater value for the library in consideration of individual career goals.
* Resolves problems, complaints and grievances.
Minimum Qualifications include:
* Bachelor’s degree in a related field; 3-5 years successful supervisory/managerial experience, preferably in a multi-branch library system.
* 3-5 years experience providing desk service in a public library setting.
* Strong administrative skills, including budget and scheduling management.
* Ability to gather and analyze data and to justify courses of action.
* Experience training staff.
* Knowledge of current and emerging library methods and procedures.
* Ability to apply and use new technologies to expand and enhance public service.
* Ability to make sound decisions in a timely manner, using good judgment.
* Excellent active listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
* Strong leadership skills.
* Effective problem solving skills.
* Proven ability to inspire teamwork, build relationships and maintain a flexible and accessible leadership style. Demonstrated emotional intelligence
* Ability to motivate staff to be creative and comfortable with change and innovation.
* Ability to work enthusiastically with a diverse staff and community.
Preferred Qualifications include:
* Experience managing in a union environment.
* Experience in project management.
* Fluency in a language other than English.
* Ability to work successfully within a complex organizational structure.
