YALSA's Transforming Teen Services
Transforming Teen Services - YALSA
Need ideas for teen programming? Come explore Youth Voice & Choice at this workshop via a framework for teen services called Connected Learning (CL) that uses the building blocks of teen interests, relationships with peers and caring adults and opportunities (from college and career to leadership and civic engagement). This workshop will also cover the basics of Computational Thinking (CT), which is a problem-solving framework, not coding or computer science -- and no technology is required! This is a great way for library staff who are less comfortable with tech to build STEM programs. This workshop is participatory & hands-on, and will help participants scaffold knowledge they may already have about CL and CT and use it to recognize the ways in which CT supports CL.
Free (lunch included) and In-Person, 10am-5pm ET at the three following locations:
Monday, November 14th at Bloomfield Township Public Library<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/event.jsp?event=2570>,
Tuesday, November 15th at KDL's Kentwood Branch<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/event.jsp?event=2575>,
or Thursday, November 17th at Otsego County Library<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/event.jsp?event=2580>

Including...
The Youth Services Basics Overview course is now available in LM's Niche Academy Staff Skills<https://my.nicheacademy.com/staffskills/course/45478>. This course is designed as an introduction to library services for public library staff who are new to libraries and/or working with youth. Whether you are already working in a library or just starting out in a new youth services position, this content will help you consider why library services focusing specifically on youth are important, how to collect appropriate materials, the types of services and programs you can provide to your patrons, and the importance of outreach services.
This course contains an Overview of Youth Services, followed by age-specific sections on Early Childhood, School Age Children, and Tweens & Teens. An accompanying workbook has also been included and public library staff can complete the sections to earn badges.
This course was created in collaboration by the Indiana State Library, Library of Michigan, Montana State Library, and the Tennessee State Library and Archives, with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Teen Driver Parental Toolkit
Traffic safety advocates across the country are working to encourage parents and their teens to talk about the importance of safe driving during National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 16-22, 2022. That week, and every week, parents should have conversations with their teens about the important rules they need to follow to stay safe behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and even as a passenger. With the help of involved parents, teens can become safer, smarter drivers. Teen drivers with actively involved parents are half as likely to be involved in a crash. To help parents manage their teens' driving and keep them safe, the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) has created a Parent Toolkit and video<https://www.michigan.gov/msp/divisions/ohsp/safety-programs/teen-drivers/teen-driver-parental-toolkit>. Please share the toolkit with all teen parents in your districts.

MDE's Annual Report
Michigan Department of Education has released this year's annual report<https://www.michigan.gov/mde/-/media/Project/Websites/mde/top10/2022-MDE-Annual-Report.pdf?rev=5a1c07e1ac84493089097d9bd6b0460e&hash=5DCF96EF15051CF747F620486A512CB5>, which highlights much of the important progress that the education community has made. Highlights include greater investments in and expansion of the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), significant investments in early child care access and programming, intense focus on addressing the state's teacher shortage, response to student mental health needs, enhancement of educator knowledge of important historical movements and events, and a generational state school aid budget that empowers all eight of the Top 10 Strategic Education Plan goals.
