Subject: [Michlib-l] Exciting name change at Flint Public Library!

Hi, Michigan Libraries!

You may have already heard the exciting news that Flint Public Library is seeking to change its name to Gloria Coles Flint Public Library in honor of our former Director and good friend Gloria J. Coles. This arose from a grassroots effort in Flint and came before our Board of Trustees over the past few months. The official name change is now in the hands of the City and the School District who must amend our District Library Agreement, then send to the State Library for approval, before the change becomes final.

Gloria lives in Detroit and is still very active in Flint where she served as a Trustee and now Trustee Emeritus at the Ruth Mott Foundation, helping to shape much of the philanthropic work that Foundation does. She has been my most important mentor and advisor during my time as Library Director. She hired me in 1998 fresh out of library school, starting my second career, and taught me so much about the crucial role public libraries can play in their communities if they do the work. I am so happy that she has agreed to accept this honor!
