[Michlib-l] Hotspots

We have a staff member that is assigned to check on Hotspots/Chromebooks and if they are overdue by a day we shut off service. Chromebooks are rather easy, T-Mobile Hotspots are more in-depth. However, we charge $1 a day for late fees. We also have the person in charge of them contact the patron the day or two after its due as a reminder. We find most patrons just forget.

We have had lost ones and they are made lost like any other material. I think it is 3 weeks after not being returned.

We had about four hotspots become lost. So we also track those that return hotspots late. First time we just make sure they know to contact us, second time being late we put them on a temporary ban for two weeks to a month. It they do it a third time and depending on severity they get banned from checking them out.

The ban seems extreme but since implementing it, it really has changed our late returners to where some of the worse offenders are religiously early in returning/renewing. Once we have had the talk with them no one really has repeated the offense. We simply just remind them you can call and let us know why it'll be late we just want a heads up and not to ignore us. I have had no patrons get mad about it, they usually understand and most are apologetic. If anyone is interested in that just email me I can explain how we track, its a simple condition log I created to ensure when checked in and out the device is working.

We have had two hotspots that were not returned. When a hotspot is 1 week late, we cut off service. If it's still not returned after another week, we get a replacement from t-mobile and permanently remove the stolen one from our service plan.

We circulate hotspots for 2 weeks with no renewals, but we will extend a checkout in extenuating circumstances.

We do not charge a deposit, but we do have stiff fines for failure to return, damage and late returns.

Dear Librarians,

If you circulate hotspots to your patrons what do you do when the hotspot is not returned? Do any of the libraries charge a deposit for the hotspot? How long a time period do you circulate your hotspots?
