[A white letter on a blue green and red background Description automatically generated with low confidence]The federal government takes 11 holidays per year. Juneteenth National Independence Day, the most recent addition to that list, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Often called Emancipation Day or Jubilee Day, Juneteenth marks the day (June 19) in 1865—over 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/additionalcontent/10435235> was signed—when a Union general informed enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas that the Civil War had ended and that they were free. From the earliest learner to the more advanced, there are articles, video clips, images, and primary source documents available in the Michigan eLibrary (MeL)<https://mel.org/welcome> to further our understanding of the newest federal holiday.

Radio & News Transcripts
While Points of View Reference Center<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ebscoprofile-pov> offers thousands of articles<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&encode=1&proxy=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=&target=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&bquery=juneteenth&cli0=FT&clv0=Y&type=0&searchMode=And&site=pov-live> and several images articulating the many pieces of history that led to the establishment of this federal holiday, one unique holding in this eResource is Radio & News Transcripts. These include complete transcripts from CBS Evening News, CNN Newsroom, Fox News, NBC Nightly News, and the Today Show among others. Additionally, this eResource allows users to utilize the limiters to search for international articles about Juneteenth and other subjects.

eBooks
In the eBook Academic Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ebsco-e000xna>, Juneteenth: The Story Behind the Celebration<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&encode=1&proxy=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=&target=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=e000xna&AN=2946994&site=ehost-live&scope=site> gives a scholarly account on the holiday’s history. Early Learning
For our earliest learners, PebbleGo<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=pebblego> Social Studies and Britannica School<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=eb> offer great video and audio tools to help support Juneteenth history and understanding. In PebbleGo Social Studies, students can click the Holiday link and see that Juneteenth is included among the 39 holidays listed. Britannica School has a thorough summary of the holiday as well as embedded links to related articles. Maybe the most notable offering from Britannica is this Q&A video<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/assembly/view/256111> that articulates the history and offers images of current celebrations around the country.
