Many Homes of the Library of Michigan
The Library of Michigan derives its origins from the Michigan Territorial legislation "An Act to provide for the appointment of a Librarian," which was approved on June 16, 1828. Over the 195 years since the creation of the librarian position, the Library of Michigan has resided in several different locations. During Michigan's territorial and early statehood period, the library's collection was maintained within the confines of the capitol buildings in Detroit and Lansing. To learn more about the many moves and reorganizations the Library of Michigan experienced following its time in those early capitol structures, check out The Many Homes of the Library of Michigan<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDIsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm1pY2hpZ2FuLmdvdi9saWJyYXJ5b2ZtaWNoaWdhbi9hYm91dC9oaXN0b3J5L2hpc3RvcnktYXJ0aWNsZXMvdGhlLW1hbnktaG9tZXMtb2YtdGhlLWxpYnJhcnktb2YtbWljaGlnYW4iLCJidWxsZXRpbl9pZCI6IjIwMjMwNjE3Ljc4NDA0OTUxIn0.3JcPN72nI1TnRJ1cpdrJsJEI6Wx1U3hnHsm4Y_vq0Ic/s/2161323186/br/206028932039-l> page on the Library of Michigan's website. Paying Homage to Past State Library Staff
As part of celebrating the Library of Michigan's 195th anniversary, the Library's Special Collections staff paid homage to all the past employees who served the state library by recreating a photograph of former State Librarian Mary Spencer and her staff in 1895. At the time the photo was taken, the state library was located in the west wing of the Michigan State Capitol, having moved there when the capitol building opened in 1879. The current staff at the Library of Michigan continues to build on the stewardship and service of the past generations of library staff that came before.

Library of Michigan's Legacy at Michigan State Capitol
Recently State Librarian Randy Riley and other Library of Michigan staff participated in a tour of the Michigan State Capitol's recently opened Heritage Hall<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDQsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsInVybCI6Imh0dHA6Ly9jYXBpdG9sLm1pY2hpZ2FuLmdvdi9Ub3VycyIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMzA2MTcuNzg0MDQ5NTEifQ.pHU-Jz69Xf5oftKMcllxzxfkVtxzJ5dsV1Ct-gjmaqo/s/2161323186/br/206028932039-l>. Facilitated by the Michigan State Capitol Commission and the Capitol's Tour, Education and Information Service, Heritage Hall is an underground visitors center and event space that is the new entryway for visitors entering the Michigan State Capitol. It includes expanded tour orientation rooms, history exhibits, an artifact conservation space, a large meeting space, and more to accommodate the thousands of visitors that come to the capitol building.
A favorite part of the tour was seeing a portion of the exhibit space currently highlighting the Library of Michigan's history within the capitol. The state library collections spent time in all 3 of Michigan's capitol buildings, starting in the territorial courthouse in Detroit and later in both the 2nd and 3rd capitol buildings in Lansing. The need for expanded collections and staff space would eventually lead to the bulk of the state library moving to the main floor of the new (Elliott-Larsen) State Office Building at the corner of South Walnut and Kalamazoo Streets. The Law Library staff and collections remained at the Capitol until 1969, when they moved into the G. Mennen Williams state office building on Ottawa Street.
The display also highlighted the tenure of former State Librarian Harriet Tenney, the first female Michigan State Librarian as well as Michigan's first female state officer and state department head. Special thanks to Capitol Historian & Curator Valerie Marvin for showcasing the new Heritage Hall facility.

Juneteenth Holiday Closure - Saturday, June 17 through Monday, June 19
The Library of Michigan will be closed Saturday, June 17, 2023 through Monday, June 19, 2023 in observance of the Juneteenth holiday<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDUsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm1pY2hpZ2FuLmdvdi93aGl0bWVyL25ld3MvcHJvY2xhbWF0aW9ucy8yMDIzLzA2LzE5L2p1bmUtMTktMjAyMy1qdW5ldGVlbnRoLWNlbGVicmF0aW9uLWRheSIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMzA2MTcuNzg0MDQ5NTEifQ._hjWykuZ2yloiLygCd5UV5Lnu1jsv6wZIrtN_wH_yyk/s/2161323186/br/206028932039-l>. The Library of Michigan will reopen on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
The Juneteenth holiday is derived from when Union Army General Gordon Granger landed at the Texas port city of Galveston in 1865 as the Civil War ended. One of General Grangers first actions was to read General Order #3 on June 19, 1865, which stated that all slaves are free and that former masters and slaves have absolute equality of personal and property rights. The Emancipation Proclamation, signed on Jan. 1, 1863, legally freed all slaves in the U.S., but slavery was not yet fully abolished during the period leading up to the Civil War's end. The day the announcement was made became known as Juneteenth.
First formally observed in Texas in 1866, Juneteenth became a holiday that slowly spread throughout the country as Black Americans moved north during the Great Migration. In Michigan, early celebrations of emancipation were observed Aug. 1 when Frederick Douglass spoke in Battle Creek after the Civil War. For many years, the day remained for celebrating emancipation in Michigan.
Juneteenth celebrations began decades ago in Michigan, but it wasn't officially celebrated in Detroit until the 1990s. In 2005, Michigan was the 18th state in the nation to declare the third Saturday of June as Juneteenth. It became a federal holiday in June 2021.

Celebrate Freedom
June 15, 2023 | Detroit News, The (MI) | Samin Hassan | Page D1

July 4th was proclaimed the day America became a free nation. But for more than a century afterIndependence Day, Black Americans remained enslaved. The Emancipation Proclamation, signed on Jan. 1, 1863, legally freed all slaves in the U.S., but slavery was not yet fully abolished. It wasn't until about two years later on June 19th, 1865, that Gen. Gordon Granger officially declared from the president of the United States that all slaves were freed.
Then in June 2021, it became a federal holiday, and on Wednesday the Michigan House voted 105-4 to
recognize Juneteenth as a public holiday.
