Welcome, Dean Bracke!

Paul Bracke, dean of the Wayne State University Library System and School of Information Sciences[https://mcusercontent.com/71069e78b2e149adc34550c95/images/bd9cd132-bf2e-062c-2ab9-4b4cb14ac730.jpeg] was welcomed to campus on Thursday, October 19, at a reception with faculty and staff.

Prior to starting his role as dean on October 16, Bracke was dean of the Foley Center Library at Gonzaga University's Spokane, Washington, campus since 2016. He also has served as associate provost for the Institute for Research and Interdisciplinary Initiatives for the last two years. He previously was associate dean at the Purdue University Libraries, where he provided leadership in technology, digitization, research services and assessment.

Bracke's appointment follows an exhaustive and highly consultative search process, thanks to the dedication of the search committee, chaired by Irvin D. Reid Honors College Dean John Corvino. Paul Beavers, who has provided support as interim associate dean of the WSULS since 2022, served as interim dean of the library system and SIS, before Bracke’s arrival, a position previously held by Associate Dean Tom Walker (currently on leave from the university until August 2024).

SIS faculty and staff welcomed students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff back to campus with a kick-off celebration in August. Members of the Wayne State community got to meet President Kimberly Andrews Espy (second from left, pictured with Associate Professor Joan Beaudoin, Diversity Outreach Graduate Student Assistant Tori Robinson and Communications Coordinator Sarah Freeman).

Espy, an accomplished leader with more 25 years of experience in higher education, became the university’s 13th president on August 1. Peter Spyers-Duran, dean and professor emeritus of the School of Information Sciences, passed away on July 2, 2023. He served as dean and professor of the library and information science program from 1983 until his retirement in 1995.
