In this CSLP Summer Symposium keynote, Jen will use her years of experience working with librarians and her insights as a library performer and consultant to share thoughts and ideas for Summer Reading 2024 that will help you get inspired and organized while streamlining the planning process, enlisting more community partners, and engaging patrons in a simple program structure that includes all ages and doesn't leave you feeling fried at the end of the summer.

2:00 - 3:00 pm Once Upon an Adventure: Practical Tips for Gathering Stories to Promote Your Library - Angela Hursh
You know the power of storytelling. After all, you work in a building where you are literally surrounded by some of the best stories in the world. So why is it so hard for libraries to tell their own stories? It's because we often get stuck at the very first step in the process: finding the right stories to share with our community. The quest for library stories that have emotion and a compelling story arch perfect for library advocacy is more difficult than it sounds. But, in this session, you'll learn how a good story becomes good marketing, as well as practical tips to find stories that you can use for advocacy and promotion.
3:30- 4:30 pm Taking the Adventures Outdoors: Programming and Partnerships
Join us for a discussion on the various ideas, resources, and partners that can support your library in outdoor programming. We'll share program ideas for libraries of different sizes, staff availability, and budget, along with information about a great resource called 1,000 Hours Outdoors that can help tie together your outdoor programming. We will also be joined by the National Forest Service to learn more about the upcoming 80th birthday of Smokey Bear and ways to incorporate that into your summer programming.
Presenters:
* Annie Spence*, Outreach Librarian, Grosse Pointe Public Library
* Melissa Rizer*, Youth Services Librarian, Grosse Pointe Public Library
* Susan Cox, National Forest Service, Conservation Education Coordinator, Region 9 - USDA Forest Service
* Jessica Nickelsen, Director, Natural Inquirer, FIND Outdoors
* Facilitated by Amanda Raiche, Youth Services Coordinator, South Dakota State Library

So many great tips & ideas to get a jump start on your summer programming!
