[A white letter on a blue green and red background Description automatically generated]In my days as a school librarian, kids often asked me if I had read every book in the library. Despite being an avid reader, I had to tell them that I had not, in fact, read all 10,000+ books in our collection. No matter your job description, if you work in a library people expect you to know a lot about books and be up to date on issues that impact libraries. The Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/az.php> (MeL) eResources can be your partner in this endeavor.
Library and Information Science Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ebsco-lls> includes current book review journals. Instead of waiting to read a single copy or paying for multiple subscriptions, library staff can simultaneously access current, full-text issues of Booklist<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lls&jid=BLL&site=ehost-live>, Library Journal<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lls&jid=LIJ&site=ehost-live>, School Library Journal<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lls&jid=SLJ&site=ehost-live>, Kirkus Reviews<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lls&jid=IZ4&site=ehost-live>, Horn Book Magazine<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lls&jid=HBM&site=ehost-live>, and Publishers Weekly<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lls&jid=PWK&site=ehost-live>. To quickly find a review for a book, each record in NoveList Plus<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ebscoprofile-novplus> and NoveList K-8 Plus<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ebscoprofile-novpk8> has the text of professional reviews from multiple sources. For those adding audiobooks to collections, reviews are available from AudioFile<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=f6h&jid=3E97&site=ehost-live> magazine in MasterFILE Complete<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ebsco-f6h>.
Tasks such as locating ideas to make decisions about programming and staying updated about current issues impacting libraries are made easier with the MeL eResources. Titles in the eBook Academic Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ebsco-e000xna> focus on all aspects of librarianship. Recent publications such as Library Services and Incarceration: Recognizing Barriers, Strengthening Access<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=e000xna&AN=3657615&site=ehost-live&scope=site> by Jeanie Austin, The Special Collections Handbook<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=e000xna&AN=3029218&site=ehost-live&scope=site> by Alison Cullingford, and Foundations of Information Literacy<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=e000xna&AN=3657626&site=ehost-live&scope=site> by Natalie Greene Taylor provide insight into various aspects of library work. Similarly, sharing articles from library-focused journals is a great way to develop the capacity of a staff. Publications in Library and Information Science Source such as Children & Libraries: The Journal of the Association for Library Service to Children<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lls&jid=R5A&site=ehost-live>, Computers in Libraries<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lls&jid=CLB&site=ehost-live>, and Information Today<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lls&jid=IFT&site=ehost-live> present a variety of perspectives from colleagues in the field. Sharing an article from one of these publications among a staff or department is a great way to spark conversation about what is happening in the wider library community.
October is National Book Month and a lot of attention has been focused on libraries throughout 2023. Use professional eBooks and journals from the MeL eResources<https://mel.org/az.php> to help your staff gain expertise and keep your community reading.
