To Jesse Cornea, Library Associate, Brandon Twp Public Library
AI found the following information about the science fiction short story,
found the title and synopsis, but no author, still looking. Hope this helps:
Title: "The Verdant Reign"
On the planet Xylos, a vibrant, verdant world, the dominant life form wasn't
animal, but plant - a sprawling, interconnected network of sentient flora
called "The Core." Humans, forced to adapt to this alien ecosystem, lived in
precarious harmony beneath the Core's watchful tendrils, their lives
dictated by its whims and needs.
The Core and Its Control:
The Canopy:
The Core manifested as a vast canopy of luminous, bioluminescent leaves that
spanned the entire planet, casting a soft, ethereal glow. It communicated
through subtle shifts in light patterns and subtle vibrations that only the
most attuned could interpret.
Symbiosis:
Humans relied on the Core for sustenance, drawing nutrients from specialized
"fruiting vines" that grew based on the planet's needs. In return, the Core
required the humans to maintain the delicate balance of the ecosystem,
performing tasks like pruning excess vegetation and dispersing seeds.
The Keepers:
A select group of humans, known as the "Keepers," were chosen from birth for
their unique ability to perceive the Core's signals and interpret its
desires. They acted as intermediaries between the human population and the
Core, ensuring compliance and mediating potential conflicts.
Life Under the Core:
The story explores the concept of a planet ruled by an intelligent,
interconnected plant life, raising questions about the balance between human
needs and the natural world.
The Cost of Control:
The narrative examines the potential dangers of relying too heavily on a
single, controlling entity, highlighting the importance of autonomy and
critical thinking.
Symbiosis and Responsibility:
The story delves into the complexities of a symbiotic relationship, where
both parties need to adapt and compromise for mutual survival.

Hi Trish -
We have a student board member. I attached all our documentation on the
process and the application.
We love having the perspective of a teen on our board. Even though they are
non-voting, they provide excellent input.
We treat them the same as any other board member and have the same
responsibilities, except for voting and their term. They are with us for one
year, June through May.
The hardest part of this is the recruitment. Finding the best teachers to go
through helps, and utilizing the current teen to help recruit has been very
fruitful.
Let me know if you have any questions.

December 2024
President's Message
[Headshot of Deborah Doyle]
As we absorb the results of the 2024 election results, let us acknowledge
the importance of this time for our communities, our country and for each of
us individually. .This period of uncertainty will be unsettling for many of
us and the institutions we support; however, we will be traveling through
this together. Traditionally, libraries and library supporters value civic
engagement and democratic processes; by focusing on our values and doing
what we do best together, we can contribute positively, working with
respect, compassion and understanding as we move forward.
Now is the time to touch base with your newly elected officials at all
levels - local, regional, state and national. If they are new, let them know
of the importance of libraries and intellectual freedom before they
officially take office. Write, email or visit their new local office. Bring
them a book, make them a member and sign them up for your newsletters. Get
to know their staff. For those who have been reelected, congratulate them
and remind them what your library does for their constituents. Don't forget
to thank those who lost or are retiring. Keep in touch with them, too. They
may have some valuable suggestions and connections.
In this busy holiday season, United continues to provide valuable resources.
Mark your calendars for Learning
Live<https://www.ala.org/united/training/learning-live> on Dec. 10, and our
Dec. 12 virtual roundtable

Nzg0MSZwPTEmdT0xMTIwMDM2Mjc0JmxpPTExMjk4MjkzNg/index.html>. If you have
requests or have a story to tell, please let us know. We are also very
excited about United's collaboration with Penguin Random House that will
provide grants that will help rural and small

zg0MSZwPTEmdT0xMTIwMDM2Mjc0JmxpPTExMjk4MjkzNw/index.html>. Please spread the
word and take advantage of this opportunity.
If you've found United's resources helpful in the past and/or want to help
strengthen our reach, please consider making a gift to United for

AG Nessel Reissues Ransomware Consumer Alert on Computer Security Day
LANSING - To raise awareness on Computer Security Day, Michigan Attorney
General Dana Nessel is reissuing a consumer alert on computer

0d142202-000000/ofG8-B4ppAF5n1g_m14ZGXWknc6B8wbZPj66JoOp2rk=382>. Ransomware
is a form of malware that threatens the security of your electronic devices
when it gains access to the device. It then encrypts and disables the entire
operating system or individual files, locking a user out of their systems
and preventing access to their information.
One of the most common paths to a ransomware infection is downloading
malware by opening an attachment or clicking on a link in an unsolicited
email. These emails trick users by pretending to be from a source they
trust, which is also known as phishing.
"Cybercriminals are becoming more and more sophisticated," Nessel said. "To
protect yourself, take the time to understand ransomware attacks and learn
ways to protect yourself from bad actors."
There are a number of actions residents can take to protect against
ransomware:
* Make sure all your devices are protected with comprehensive security
software and keep all software up to date.
* Update software often, as patches for flaws are typically included in
each update.
* Don't respond to emails or text messages from people you don't know,
and only download applications from trusted sources.
* Never click on links or open attachments in unsolicited emails.
* Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks, since many of them are not secure,
and cybercriminals can snoop on your internet usage.
* Back up your data onto an external hard drive or cloud regularly.
* Remember to unplug your external device when not in use as some
malware can also infect devices attached to your computer.
* Never use USB sticks from unknown sources.

Good afternoon! Starting January 14th, the Library of Michigan will have a
Grants Office Hour at 3:00PM on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. Join our
monthly discussion about all things grants. Discuss questions about Library
of Michigan grants and grants in general. We will cover planning programs,
developing budgets, issues with partnerships, evaluations, managing the
grant requirements, funder relationships and anything else you'd like to
discuss. Each session will have information on a topic and an open question
time.
Register for the Grants Office Hour at
