ALA
ALA President Emily Drabinski announced a call for volunteers to serve on the ALA Core Values Working Groups. Per Council Document #34<https://www.ala.org/aboutala/sites/ala.org.aboutala/files/content/ALA%20CD%2034%20Core%20Values%20Task%20Force%20Report_LLX%202024.pdf>, approved at the recent LibLearnX 2024 meeting, the ALA Executive Board will assign working groups, committees, or round tables to write interpretations for each Core Value. Volunteers must be active ALA Members. Please note that filling out this form indicates your interest to the ALA Executive Board and does not guarantee an appointment. The ALA Executive Board will make the final appointments to the Working Groups.  The deadline is Thursday, February 29, 2024. The Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers list identifies titles aimed at encouraging reading among teens who dislike to read for whatever reason. The list selects fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novel titles. Social Determinants of Environmental Health Webinar Series
Join one or all of the 9 sessions of the Network of the National Library of Medicine's (NNLM) Social Determinants of Environmental Health webinar series<https://www.nnlm.gov/training/class-catalog/sdoeh-webinar-series>. The series runs from March 5 - April 2 starting at 3:00 pm ET. Each session is 1.5 hours long and will include the guest speaker(s) presentation, a Q&A time, and an additional activity to further reflect, discuss, or do. This additional time is also your chance to go beyond just the presentation. The webinar series will also have an accompanying guide with supplemental information about the speaker, the topic, and related NNLM, NLM, NIH, or other organization or association resources for you to peruse and consider offering to your communities. The Library of Michigan invites you to join Mother Goose on the Loose<https://mgol.net/>, Betsy Diamant-Cohen, as we explore The Ready to Read Michigan Parent & Early Childhood Educator Toolkit. The programs in the toolkit are designed for library staff to host throughout the community, engaging and modeling early literacy practices to parents, caregivers, and early childhood educators. Betsy will equip library staff with the information, skills, and ready-to-use tools to promote early literacy through your library, copies of the toolkit will be provided.
This RTRM training will start with an introduction/refresher on the how, what and why's of early literacy skills and best storytelling practices. Then we will transition to cover the workshops in the Ready to Read Michigan Toolkit, which are designed specifically for library staff to easily facilitate with parents and caregivers with children ages 5 and under. Lastly, participants will address the important role played by Early Childhood Educators in the development of children from birth to age five, using familiar tips and tools on how to conduct a two-part workshop for Early Childhood Educators at your library, supported by the materials produced by Ready to Read Michigan<https://www.readytoreadmi.org/home>.
