Around ALA

Reader. Voter. Ready. ALA’s voter engagement campaign moves libraries toward election day 2024

[Logo: Reader. Voter. Ready. American Library Association]<https://americanlibraryassociation.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMTU5MTg2NyZwPTEmdT0xMTIwMDM2Mjc0JmxpPTEwOTk4OTgwMg/index.html>

As we approach local, state, and national elections, ALA is calling on everyone in the library community to pledge that they will be registered, informed and ready to vote in 2024 elections. ALA’s Reader. Voter. Ready.<https://americanlibraryassociation.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMTU5MTg2NyZwPTEmdT0xMTIwMDM2Mjc0JmxpPTEwOTk4OTgwMg/index.html> campaign is rolling out resources to support libraries in that vital role. Partnering with the League of Women Voters, ALA released a jointly produced toolkit for libraries, social media graphics and a joint webinar on May 29 (recording available here) highlighting local collaborative efforts and introduced a new, jointly produced toolkit. ALA will add new resources to the Reader. Voter. Ready.<https://americanlibraryassociation.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMTU5MTg2NyZwPTEmdT0xMTIwMDM2Mjc0JmxpPTEwOTk4OTgwMg/index.html> webpage throughout the 2024 election cycle.

Stand with your LGBTQ+ community: Oppose resolution to discriminate against them

Many library workers, patrons, Friends and Trustees celebrated Pride month in June, showing support for LGBTQ+ persons in our communities. However, some in Congress now want to overturn new federal policies that protect them from discrimination. Some U.S. Representatives introduced a resolution to undo those protections. ALA is calling on library leaders to urge their Representative to oppose<https://americanlibraryassociation.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMTU5MTg2NyZwPTEmdT0xMTIwMDM2Mjc0JmxpPTEwOTk4OTgwNA/index.html> the resolution if it comes up for a vote. Background: A new policy set to go into effect on Aug. 1 would prohibit sex-based discrimination in any school or any other education program that receives funding from the federal government under Title IX. ALA supports this rule, which would protect LGBTQ+ library workers from employment inequities and censorship of library content with targeting queer characters or themes. Join ALA and tell your member of Congress to oppose this resolution.
