Not a media file itself—usually accompanies other files to help with organization and editing.
* .mxf (Material Exchange Format)
A professional video and audio container format used in broadcast and production environments. Supports high-quality, uncompressed footage and metadata—commonly used in TV and film.
* .mov (QuickTime Movie)
Developed by Apple, it’s a widely used video format that supports high-quality video and audio. Often used in editing environments (like Final Cut Pro) and for preserving quality.
* .mp4 (MPEG-4 Part 14)
A highly compressed, widely compatible video format ideal for online distribution and playback. Commonly used for final delivery to audiences, especially via the web and social media.
Social Media Toolkit
Available in two formats this year. PNG files and/or Canva templates.
1. PNG files that can be used as the graphical elements in your social media posts.
Once you are logged into the manual (need your manual access code? Complete this form<https://forms.gle/Ms1w1JREF6UyLPao9> so Cathy can send that to you directly), you can navigate to the 2025 Social Media Toolkit or go directly to https://programs.cslpreads.org/2025-social-media-toolkit/.
Just hit the download button once you're at that link and a zipped file will download all the imagery to your downloads folder on your computer. Unzip and use from there.
2. Canva template of all the images can be customized to include elements such as your library logo, dates, and times of programs. Libraries will need a Canva account to access and use the templates, and since we avoided using Pro account elements, Canva Free should be sufficient. This is a pilot year on offering this option so feedback will be appreciated. Thanks to our Social Media Committee!

Resources
Sensory-Friendly Programming: Lessons from Small & Rural Libraries
Small and rural libraries are at the forefront of efforts to make communities more inclusive of people who identify as neurodivergent. With the support of the American Library Association’s “Libraries Transforming Communities<https://www.ala.org/tools/librariestransform/libraries-transforming-communities/access>” (LTC), they are designing programs that expand access to patrons with sensory sensitivities — including those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this blog post<https://programminglibrarian.org/articles/sensory-friendly-programming-lessons-small-rural-libraries>, we share what these libraries are learning as they implement sensory-friendly programs. Lessons from their work can inform efforts not only within the library sector, but across a wide variety of cultural and public institutions. How to Add Sensory–Friendly Programs & Resources to Your Library<https://programminglibrarian.org/articles/how-add-sensory-friendly-programs-resources-your-library> is also a useful resource.
3 New videos for storytime (free) with a note from Jim Gill…
“Many early childhood professionals tell me that they primarily access music through the “smartboard” or screen in their classrooms. And that they often use YouTube to share music with children.
I recently released three new videos<https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPIpzCOqQwjTsGAnt14EobTYh4yuoiB8W> on YouTube that I hope will be shared on those screens! You’ll notice that these are different from most videos. Each begins with this message: YOU ARE THE ACTION! I appear only briefly, to introduce each musical game and to emphasize that if everyone listens to the words and listens to the music, they will know exactly how to play along. After my introduction, there is not much to watch. AND THAT IS EXACTLY THE IDEA! My goal is to create classroom music that promotes listening and gives children an opportunity to focus on the words, melodies and rhythms they hear. These videos intentionally challenge children to listen for cues about how and when to join in the play…and to listen for cues about when to stop and wait 😊. I can imagine caring adults, like us, engaging in the play and providing guidance as needed. My goal has always been to promote playful interactions between caring adults and the children they work with and care for. We all know that young children don’t need more time watching screens. But if these screens are the delivery devices for music, I want my ACTIVE musical games—that hone listening skills while promoting joyful engagement—to be shared on those screens. I want to be on everyone’s playlist encouraging children to listen, move and PLAY!
I hope you’ll conclude that there is a place for these resources in your classroom circle time or library story time.” For more information on Jim Gill, go to: https://jimgill.com/.
Summer Food Services Program
There are a couple of different ways that libraries can participate in the SFSP. You can partner with an existing sponsor and become a feeding site, or go to feeding sites and read books to children while they eat. You can also provide information to library patrons about where feeding sites are located in the community. For a site to be eligible to participate in the SFSP, the site must be located in an area where 50% or more of the children living in the attendance area of the closest school are eligible for free and reduced-priced meals during the school year. If you’re interested in becoming a site, contact the SFSP team<https://www.michigan.gov/mde/services/food/summer/topics/contact-us>.
