Serving Colorblind Patrons in Your Community

Colorblindness may not be a common occurrence you see every day. About 300 million people are colorblind across the world. While that is a small percentage of our overall population, that doesn’t mean that your library can’t be prepared to serve patrons who are colorblind.

According to the National Institute of Health, colorblindness “means a person see colors differently than most people. Most of the time, color vision deficiency makes it hard to tell the difference between certain colors. Usually, color vision deficiency runs in families. Most people who have color vision deficiency don’t have problems with everyday activities.” Most of the issues for colorblind people come from red-and-green combinations as a pair of opposites in design in posters, presentations, etc. The first rule of making a palette for colorblind – avoid combining red and green.

If you want to continue supporting colorblind patrons, purchasing a pair of color correcting glasses, like the kind made by EnChroma could help enhance their use of the library. Or the glasses could be put into circulation through a ‘library of things’ so a colorblind patron could test them out before deciding to buy a pair for themselves.

Below is a list of resources and articles about supporting those who are colorblind.

2025 CSLP Manual
Chapter 2, p. 62

Chapter 2 of the 2025 CSLP manual is full of drawing and painting ideas! Check out "Bouquet Shadow Drawings" on page 62 for a simple and sunny creative project. Adjustable for a variety of ages, shadow drawings can be a great way to provide some guidance and inspiration for those that might not know "where to start."

________________________________

Place a bouquet (in a container) on or near a piece of watercolor paper, creating a shadow that falls on the paper. Using a pencil, trace the shadow of the flowers. Paint the inside of the outline with water, then add watercolor paint to the wet paper, allowing the paint to blend and bloom.
For more detailed instructions, visit page 62 of the 2025 manual<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405&id=b0a4fa9c5d&e=c18caf2bb6> (access code needed).

Adaptations

  * To encourage more creativity and individuality in the process, prompt your participants to explore the outside space you are working in, choosing their own subject from the environment - tree branches and leaves on a tree above, plants growing in a nearby perennial garden, etc. Use pieces of cardboard for a flat surface for tracing in a variety of outdoor locations.
  * Younger participants might enjoy using animal figurines to cast the shadow they trace.
  * Substitute crayons, markers, or pastels for the watercolor paint, allowing for more detail in the addition of color.
