Western Michigan University Libraries seeks a Manager-User Services in a new full-time, salaried staff position in our User Services department, with a key focus on launching and leading a new student peer learning program. This new student-to-student reference and research consulting service will provide exemplary learning interactions for our campus and give the student employees working in the program deep experience with library resources and services. Daily work in this role will include student scheduling, supervision, training, and coordination of the main Waldo Library service point.
This role reports to the User Services Librarian and works closely with three other department managers to lead library public services and daily operations, ensuring exceptional customer service and planning staff and student training. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in coordinating department activities, implementing library policies, and supervising a team of staff and student employees. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape a new initiative that supports student academic success through peer-led learning. Major Duties:
* Manages the library service center and operations.
* Provides customer service and support to library users. Monitors service expectations at the services desk.
* Leads and provides program oversight for one or more of the following areas within the User Services Department: loan fulfillment, stacks maintenance, patron records and billing, or staff and student onboarding and training.
* Coordinates department activities and programs with the library.
* Collaborates with library staff to implement library policies. Provides clarification and interpretation of library policies and procedures.
* Offers technical assistant for patrons.
* Monitors and reports the maintenance environment of the library.
* Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises staff and student employees.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Three years' relevant experience.
* Supervisory or lead experience.
* Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
* Experience in a public or customer service role in a library.
* Strong computer and technical skills.
* Demonstrated ability to respond to emergencies and ensure a safe library environment.
* Working knowledge of library search terminology, library databases, and an integrated library system.
* Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including evenings and weekends.
Desired Qualifications:
* Familiarity with peer learning programs in libraries.
This position is scheduled to work Sunday 11 :30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. and Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
