[Michlib-l] Barcode scanners

I only buy Symbol / Zebra scanners because they read everything, and they are extremely programmable. The LS2208 that ULINE sells is my preferred 1D scanner for our library.

Attaching my programming sheet for use with Symbol / Zebra / Motorola 1D scanners. If you choose to use it, you'll need to print the sheet, as 1D readers generally cannot read from a computer screen. The product manual is where I pulled these from. The manual contains a bunch of other options for programming as well. If you don't like a setting, you can often toggle it off, or return the device to its default settings.

Customizations:

  * Our ILS requires the scanner to do a carriage return after entering the barcode.
  * I disable ISBN and EAN/UPC barcode types to prevent circ staff from accidentally scanning those instead of the item barcode. I leave them enabled for tech services staff who use the ISBN and UPC to search for bib records.
  * Finally, I enable some other barcode types that other libraries use.

Subject: [Michlib-l] Barcode scanners

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has purchased a barcode scanner from ULINE that works on the different barcodes we see in libraries! I just want the assurance or confirmation that they do/don't work the way I want. I do not know what makes a scanner do all of the things to look in the specs.

Anyways,

I am looking for 1D barcode scanners that can handle ISBN and T (or other letters) barcodes and everything else we might encounter. Currently, we have some that can read the full ISBN number and others that can handle the T barcode type that we and other libraries have. Only one out of the five in our building does both! I already have a cart of items with ULINE, so that is preferred currently but I am open to others too.
