"Innocents in Peril" Exhibit Opening Event
The Library of Michigan welcomed visitors on the evening of Thursday, May 22 for an opening event of the "Innocents in Peril" exhibit in the library's Lake Erie Room. The exhibit showcases the powerful images of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Taro Yamasaki paired with the evocative poetry of author/poet Anne-Marie Oomen. It explores themes of children living with the threats of poverty, disease, natural disasters, and armed conflict.

Michigan Yearbook Collection Project - Preserving the Stories of Military Veterans.
High school yearbooks serve as more than just keepsakes of teenage memories-they are powerful tools for honoring and preserving the stories of community heroes, including veterans. There are examples of this amongst many communities across Michigan. Earlier this year, a collection of Holland Christian High School yearbooks was donated to the Library of Michigan' that Included the years that Paul Lambers attended the school (1957-1960). A few years after graduating from high school, Lambers joined the Army and by 1968, was serving as a Sergeant in Company A, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. During a firefight on August 20, 1968, in Tây Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam, Lambers took command after the platoon leader was wounded. For his conspicuous leadership during the battle, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and awarded the Medal of Honor<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.cmohs.org%2Frecipients%2Fpaul-r-lambers/1/0101019727e135b9-e94774b0-dfab-48f7-b73a-daebad687f0e-000000/eqD-Mw6_J4KiSWRXhJYdCYxL7_qCJzkNWSnRwGVkaEI=407> in December 1969.
Through his high school yearbooks, we can get a snapshot of Lambers' personal story prior to his military experience. There is a visual record of him as well as other content that indicates his academic and extracurricular achievements. They also document his association to the school and the greater community where the school is located, offering a tangible legacy to connect to. Sadly, Lambers died in 1970 at the age of 28. However, his yearbooks help share and record his personal story. This can be found with the many other military servicemembers who have come before us, and their stories are preserved through the Michigan Yearbook Collection at the Library of Michigan.
