NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
ALA applauds FY2017 budget increase for IMLS, calls on library supporters to defend federal library funding in FY2018 budget
On Monday congressional negotiators reached agreement on a bill to fund the U.S. government through September. The “omnibus” bill included $231 million for the Institute of Museum and Library Services – a $1 million increase over FY2016. American Library Association President Julie Todaro said in a statement, “In congressional meetings on Capitol Hill today, participants in the 2017 National Library Legislative Day from all 50 states are saying ‘thank you’ to members of Congress for making our nation’s libraries a priority this year. This opportunity to say thanks is also a chance to voice our unequivocal opposition to threats to cut funding in FY2018.” http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2017/05/ala-applauds-fy2017-budget-increase-imls-calls-library-supporters-defend
More than 500 library supporters gather to fight for libraries in Washington, D.C. on 2017 National Library Legislative Day
More than five hundred library advocates from every state in the nation and the District of Columbia gathered in Washington, D.C. to advocate for federal support for libraries during the American Library Association’s (ALA) 43rd annual National Library Legislative Day. Over a thousand supporters also registered to participate simultaneously through Virtual Library Legislative Day, where advocates connect with legislators via phone calls, emails and social media platforms. http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2017/05/more-500-library-supporters-gather-fight-libraries-washington-dc-2017
ALA gears up for renewed net neutrality fight
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai has announced plans to roll back net neutrality provisions. The Commission issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to begin the process at its May 18 meeting. The American Library Association (ALA) and its divisions are organizing to protect and preserve the open internet. http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2017/04/ala-gears-renewed-net-neutrality-fight
ALA urges Senate to reject bill to make Register of Copyrights a presidential appointee
Last week, the House of Representatives adopted the "Register of Copyrights Selection and Accountability Act of 2017" (H.R. 1695) to make the position of the Register of Copyrights subject to Presidential appointment and Senate confirmation. American Library Association President-Elect James Neal in a statement said, "The Senate overwhelmingly confirmed the Librarian of Congress just nine months ago because she is an expert in modernizing complex information systems in libraries and a proven manager of them: exactly what the Copyright Office needs. ALA urges the Senate to let Dr. (Carla) Hayden build her own team, including the Register of Copyrights, to accomplish that mission without further delay. H.R. 1695 isn’t the way to get there. We urge the Senate to reject it." http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2017/04/ala-urges-senate-reject-bill-make-register-copyrights-presidential-appointee
