I knew Bernie when I was a part of the Woodlands Library Coop. He was a leader and a fighter for libraries of all kinds. We often called him Bernie "Let's Make a Deal" Margolis and presented him a t-shirt with that on it. He was always trying to save the co-op libraries money. When a group of us were going to MLA in San Francisco, he found us a great hotel with rates far below the ALA rates, right across from one of the big hotels and a block from the cable car turnaround. You could always count on Bernie for good advice, counsel or a shoulder to cry on if there was a problem at your library. We had good times at the MLA Leadership Conference held at Meadowbrook Hall for several years and I have pictures to prove it! When he left for Colorado, it was, until now, one of the saddest days of my life. Bernie was the best of professionals. My thoughts and prayers go to Amanda and his family.

In my very earliest days in MLA, Bernie was always the person who started the dancing. He had a major impact on the library world both in Michigan and elsewhere, and will be missed. Connie

It is with a heavy heart that I send news of the passing of Bernie Margolis, former director of the Monroe County Library System (MI), Pikes Peak Library District (CO), and the Boston Public Library. Bernie most recently served as the New York State Librarian. Bernie was the most passionate of library champions and served the American Library Association in many roles including that of ALA Councilman.

Those of us who knew and worked with Bernie will remember his can-do attitude, his fierce defense of penal fines for public libraries in Michigan, and his vision for libraries of the future.

Bernie's obituary has not yet been published, but his funeral will be at the Levine Funeral Home in Albany New York at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 18. Burial will be at about 1 PM at the Pittsfield Cemetery in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bernie's wife, Amanda Batey Margolis.
