Tracy K. Smith named ALA President's Program Speaker at 2018 ALA Annual Conference & Exhibition
Pulitzer Prize-winning author and poet Tracy K. Smith will speak from 3 p.m. - 5 pm. on Sunday, June 24, 2018, at the 2018 ALA (American Library Association) Annual Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans. Her collection "Life on Mars" won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize and was selected as a New York Times Notable Book. The Root.com has noted that Smith's fourth and just released collection of poems, "Wade in the Water," is sure to be on everyone's awards and best-of lists.

YALSA awarded $497,635 from IMLS to implement 'Transforming Teen Services: A Train the Trainer Approach' project
The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), in partnership with the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA), will implement a new project, Transforming Teen Services: A Train the Trainer Approach from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2021. The three-year project is generously funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

LLAMA Online Competency Course teaches how to manage conflict

The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) announces the next course in an exciting new series of 4-week online courses that will help you become a better leader and boost your career to a new level. “Conflict Resolution,” will be offered May 14-June 8, and will give you the knowledge, skills and strategies you need to productively work through conflict among your team members.

Public Library Association announces library cohort for 2018 Inclusive Internship Initiative
The Public Library Association (PLA) has announced the libraries in its 2018 Inclusive Internship Initiative (III) cohort. Last summer, PLA piloted this first-of-its-kind internship program designed to present librarianship as a viable career option for the next generation of Americans. In 2017, PLA sponsored paid, mentored public library internships for 50 high school juniors and seniors at 39 host libraries across the U.S., including two tribal libraries and sites in Alaska and Hawaii.
For 2018, PLA is proud to offer this opportunity to 50 libraries, with support from IMLS’ grant RE-00-17-0129-17. Each participating library will recruit an intern who, with individual guidance from a mentor, will engage with multiple facets of library life this summer. Each intern will also complete a connected-learning project on behalf of their host library.

New member opportunities as Emerging Technologies Section grows
The Reference and User Services Association’s (RUSA) Emerging Technology Section (ETS) is transforming to better serve their members. Known for fantastic discussion groups about hot topics and engaging programs about leadership, systems, and user experience, now ETS is bringing a revitalized structure and slate of committees together to focus on equipping public-service librarians to implement tech-savvy solutions that work for all kinds of libraries and users.
“I enthusiastically support RUSA’s sections in repositioning themselves for a future of continued success within the division. I look forward to their new initiatives and even more so, the lasting impact it will have on the profession,” shared RUSA President Chris LeBeau.

ALSC announces inaugural Notable Children’s Digital Media list
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), and the Notable Children's Digital Media committee, formerly the Great Websites committee, is excited to announce its inaugural list of great digital media for children.
To highlight the shift in media focus the committee has concentrated on apps for this year’s selections. Future lists will include a diverse array of digital media for children up to age 14, including websites and video streaming. The 2018 Notable Children’s Digital Media committee has selected 15 apps that span diverse subjects from mindfulness to math. These apps introduce rich topics and engaging activities and provide a platform for play and imagination.

Readers' Advisory experts to host e-discussion on RA basics
The Readers’ Advisory Research and Trends Committee of Reference and User Services Association’s (RUSA) Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) will host its Spring 2018 CODES Convo online from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. EST on Tuesday, April 24.
Participants will be going back to basics with a discussion of RA 101: what are the key ideas and practices that everyone should be learning? The committee is pleased to have two guest moderators, Booklist editor and author Joyce Saricks and Library Journal reader’s advisory columnist and author Neal Wyatt for a portion of the conversation! Participants are welcome to bring up any issues, success stories, or questions they might have.

Registration open for YALSA’s 2018 YA Services Symposium
The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has opened registration for its 2018 YA Services Symposium, which takes place Nov. 2-4 in Salt Lake City, Utah with the theme: Zeroing In: Focusing on Teen Needs.
