ALA report shares findings, illustrates successes from 10 years of the American Dream Literacy Initiative
A newly released American Library Association (ALA) report marks the 10th anniversary of the American Dream Literacy Initiative and celebrates the many ways that participating public libraries have transformed lives, strengthened their communities, and advocated tirelessly for adult literacy and lifelong learning.
Funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the American Dream Literacy Initiative offers grants to U.S. public libraries to expand services for adult English language learners (ELL) or adults in need of basic education and workforce development. More than $1.5 million in funding has been distributed to 188 libraries since the program’s inception, reaching approximately 25,000 English language learners.

United for Libraries to designate the Dr. Benjamin E. Mays Historical Preservation Site a Literary Landmark
United for Libraries, in partnership with South Carolina State Library, South Carolina Academy of Authors, and Friends of South Carolina Libraries, will designate the GLEAMNS Dr. Benjamin E. Mays Historical Preservation Site in Greenwood, S.C., a Literary Landmark at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1.
Coming from impoverished, humbled beginnings, Dr. Mays (1894-1984) is remembered as an influential activist, intellectual, minister and leader during the civil rights movement, becoming one of the greatest international mentors of his generation. He became president of Morehouse College in 1940, where Dr. Martin Luther King graduated in 1948. King cited Mays as a mentor and father-figure. Mays published nearly 2000 articles and nine books throughout his career.

University of Wisconsin-Madison chosen as site for 2019 Arbuthnot Lecture
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) announced that the 2019 May Hill Arbuthnot Committee has selected the University of Wisconsin at Madison as the host site for the 2019 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture featuring advocate and educator Debbie Reese, PhD. Three University of Wisconsin at Madison units will combine and collaborate in this hosting effort: the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC), the School of Information (the ISchool), and the School of Education. The lecture will be held in the spring of 2019.

At 1 p.m. Eastern on Friday, August 17, during the webinar “Collaborating with Strangers: Facilitating Workshops in Libraries, Classes,and Nonprofits,” Bess G. de Farber and April Hines will discuss how CoLABs have connected people to new networks and resources. You'll gain an understanding of how CoLABs have been used in communities to reveal hidden assets as well as guidance on how their How-To-Do-It Manual can be used to facilitate these workshops.
Interaction with strangers cultivates creativity and provides opportunities for joining forces to achieve great ends. However, most people tend to avoid talking or working with people they do not know, whether in the library, a classroom, or in academic and nonprofit settings. And to do so is to short-circuit much of the creative potential that is so necessary for innovation, and that organizational stakeholders crave. Enter CoLAB, a workshop developed and presented by Bess G. de Farber at workshops across the country, and used by de Farber and April Hines to successfully spur collaboration at the University of Florida.

Creating Inclusive Storytimes for ALL Children
ALA Publishing eLearning Solutions offers a new session of its popular workshop, Creating Inclusive Storytimes for ALL Children with Carol Morrone. This workshop will last 90 minutes and take place at 2:30 p.m. Eastern/1:30 Central/12:30 Mountain/11:30 a.m. Pacific on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

ACRL releases 2017 Academic Library Trends and Statistics
The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) announces the publication of "2017 Academic Library Trends and Statistics," the latest in a series of annual publications that describe the collections, staffing, expenditures and service activities of academic libraries in all Carnegie classifications. The one-volume title includes data from Associate of Arts Colleges, Baccalaureate Colleges, Master's Colleges and Universities, and Research/Doctoral-granting Institutions. Those who purchase the print edition will receive a complimentary one-year subscription to the 2017 survey data available through ACRL Metrics, an online subscription service that provides access to the ACRL survey data from 1999-2017.
