American Library Association appoints Cushman & Wakefield as strategic real estate advisor
The American Library Association (ALA) has appointed Cushman & Wakefield as its exclusive real estate advisory firm to assist in the development of strategic real estate options that support the mission, business, and financial goals of the ALA.
As its real estate advisor, Cushman & Wakefield will provide the real estate and consulting services needed to achieve the ALA’s stated goals and optimize the value of their current headquarters at 40-50 East Huron that will ultimately help the ALA achieve greater operational excellence, grow its membership base, and have more resources to invest in programs and services for members.
“Cushman & Wakefield will provide us with strategic real estate advice and services,” said Mary Ghikas, executive director of the American Library Association. “The firm has the requisite deep experience with not-for-profits and downtown Chicago headquarters and the right resources to help us identify and secure the best real estate options.”

Your guide to the 2018 ALA elections
As the American Library Association (ALA) gears up for its 2018 elections, an electronic election guide is once again available to help inform members about the candidates and the election process. “Your Guide to the 2018 ALA Elections” contains general information about the ALA presidency, recent ALA presidential initiatives, biographical information about the two presidential candidates, and information about two ballot measures: a membership dues adjustment and educational requirements for the ALA Executive Director. Information about the ALA Council, recent Council actions, and links to information about this year’s 75 Council candidates is also provided.

Polls now open in 2018 Public Library Association Board election
Six nominees will stand for three positions: PLA President and two Director-at-Large seats. These are crucial leadership roles that will guide PLA into the next several years, ensuring the organization delivers on its core purpose to strengthen public libraries and their contribution to the communities they serve. The polls will be open from March 4 through April 4, and the election results will be announced on April 11. For the 2018 elections, eligible members were sent their voting credentials via email between March 12–14, 2018. Any individuals whose emails bounce will be sent a “snail-mail” letter with their voting credentials. To be eligible to vote, individuals must be members in good standing of ALA as well as applicable divisions and round tables as of Jan. 31, 2018.

Culinary Historian Michael W. Twitty to serve as 2018 Preservation Week® Honorary Chair
Food writer, independent scholar, culinary historian and historical interpreter Michael W. Twitty will join the Association for Library Collections &Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association, to pass on his knowledge of family history and cooking during Preservation Week, April 22 – 28, 2018, a time when librarians and library workers share their expertise about preserving family heirlooms and treasures.

Twenty-five libraries selected for Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Great Stories Club pilot program
Twenty-five libraries have been selected to participate in the pilot phase of the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Great Stories Club, a thematic reading and discussion program series that will engage underserved teens through literature-based library outreach programs and racial healing work, the American Library Association (ALA) announced.

ALSC invites applications for 2019 Arbuthnot Lecture with Dr. Debbie Reese
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the 2019 May Hill Arbuthnot Lecture Committee are proud to announce the opening of the application to host the 2019 event featuring scholar, blogger, and advocate for indigenous peoples Debbie Reese.
The Arbuthnot Lecture is an annual event, announced at the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting, in which an author, critic, librarian, historian or teacher of children’s literature presents a paper that makes a significant contribution to the field.
Applications are due May 15, 2018. Information about host site responsibilities is included in the application materials. The lecture traditionally is held in April or early May.
