Honorary Book Club Central Chair Sarah Jessica Parker has selected Sarah Smarsh’s “Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth” (Scribner) as her latest pick for the American Library Association’s (ALA) Book Club Central. Smarsh, born a fifth generation Kansas wheat farmer on her paternal side, and the product of generations of teen mothers on her maternal side, has written a memoir that combines personal narrative with powerful analysis and cultural commentary. CEO and author Sylvia Acevedo is Auditorium Speaker at 2019 ALA Midwinter Meeting<http://bit.ly/2AqtgID>


Sylvia Acevedo has worn many hats: engineer at IBM, rocket scientist at NASA, award-winning entrepreneur, commissioner on the White House Initiative for Education Excellence for Hispanics and currently CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA. She will speak from 10 – 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26. In “Path to the Stars: My Journey from Girl Scout to Rocket Scientist (Camino a las estrellas: Mi recorrido de Girl Scout a ingeniera astronáutica),” Acevedo’s memoir aimed at young readers, she retraces her journey from a young girl in an underprivileged New Mexico neighborhood to becoming one of the most accomplished and insightful women in modern history. Eric Klinenberg, sociologist and author, is Arthur Curley Memorial Lecture Speaker at 2019 ALA Midwinter Meeting<http://bit.ly/2AupbTP>


Eric Klinenberg, a professor of sociology and director of the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University, will speak from 4 – 5 p.m. on Saturday. His latest book, “Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life,” makes the provocative case that the resilience of our communities rests not on shared values but shared spaces: the libraries, day-care centers, bookstores, coffee shops and community gardens that create crucial, sometimes life-saving connections between us.
