NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

ALA, library community work to support Hurricane Florence recovery efforts
American Library Association (ALA) and its chapters in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia are working to assist libraries affected by Hurricane Florence. Support efforts will involve most Atlantic Seaboard libraries in serving as a lifeline for residents in dire need of FEMA and insurance forms, access to electrical power, internet access, heat or important information about storm relief and recovery efforts.

“Our hearts and prayers go to the more than 10 million citizens working to recover from this historic and devastating storm,” said ALA President Loida Garcia-Febo. “The ALA and library community have a long history of helping those in need and will work to support our chapters during this crisis. We have contacted our affiliates in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and other impacted states to explore how we can support relief efforts.

“As we continue to assess damage to local libraries, we ask ALA members to visit chapter websites for information regarding donations and volunteer opportunities.”

Banned Books Week 2018 focuses on author and reader activism
Speaking out for banned and challenged books is vital in the fight against censorship. During Banned Books Week (Sept. 23-29), readers are encouraged to raise their voices in support of the freedom to read by participating in engaging activities.

Nominations for I Love My Librarian Award closing Oct. 1
The American Library Association (ALA) is reminding library users that they only have two weeks left to nominate their favorite librarians for the 2018 I Love My Librarian Award. This year’s nominations will close Mon., Oct. 1 at midnight Central Daylight Time.

Library users across the country are encouraged to nominate librarians who have transformed lives and communities through education and lifelong learning at www.ilovelibraries.org/lovemylibrarian<http://www.ilovelibraries.org/lovemylibrarian>. The national award recognizes the public service accomplishments of exceptional librarians working in public, school, college, community college or university libraries in the U.S.

The ALA will select up to 10 award recipients. Each winner will receive a $5,000 cash award, a plaque and a travel stipend to attend the I Love My Librarian Award ceremony and reception in New York City on Dec. 4 hosted by the award co-sponsor, the philanthropic foundation Carnegie Corporation of New York.

AASL Standards now crosswalked to ISTE Standards and Future Ready Framework
As part of its continued commitment to provide school library professionals the materials and resources needed to implement its new “National School Library Standards,” the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has released crosswalks aligning the AASL Standards to the ISTE Standards for Learners and Educators and the Future Ready Framework. These downloadable and printable PDFs are available on the AASL Standards Portal and are a precursor to a searchable, web-based crosswalk to launch in 2019.

“I'm so excited to share that the AASL Standards Crosswalks are now available,” said AASL President Kathryn Roots Lewis. “These crosswalks reflect the depth and breadth of the new ‘National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries’ and allow school librarians to enter the conversation about their work as a learner-ready school librarian with stakeholders. I want to thank the AASL member task force who worked diligently to prepare these AASL crosswalks.”
