Kalamazoo Public Library is honored to welcome The Caldecott Medal winner, author David Small<http://www.davidsmallbooks.com/about-avenue/> to Kalamazoo on Wednesday, September 26, 7 pm, in the Van Deusen Room at Central Library<http://www.kpl.gov/cen>, 315 South Rose Street. This event is free and open to the public. No ticket or registration is required. A book signing will immediately follow. Michigan News Agency will sell books.

David Small's graphic novel follow-up to the award-winning and critically-acclaimed book Stitches, is already being lauded as a masterpiece. Home After Dark: A Novel, is the story of 13-year-old Russell's struggle with not only making new friends, but his own sexuality, after moving to California with his father. The mostly wordless story moves like the best film noir with both small- and large-screen worthy art. Readers will find it difficult not to get swept up in this heartbreaking story of a young, confused boy in the 1950's struggling to survive in a broken home. Join us as we listen to David Small share the story behind this incredible tale.

David Small was born and raised in Detroit, MI. He received his MFA at the Yale Graduate School of Art, taught art for many years at the college level, ran a film series, and made satirical sketches for campus newspapers. To date, Small has illustrated more than 40 picture books.

Recognition for Small's books include The Caldecott Medal (So You Want to be President?, 2001), The Caldecott Honor (The Gardener, 1998), National Book Award Finalist (Stitches, 2009 and The Underneath, 2008), Christopher Award (That Book woman, 2009 and The Gardener, 1998), ABBY Award Honor Book(The Gardener, 1997 and The Library, 1995), The New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year (The Library, 1995), and a Featured Selection for more than 10 years on Reading Rainbow (Imogene's Antlers, 1985).
