Director, Academic - DALNET

About DALNET
Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET) is a consortium of 15 libraries of various types, based at Wayne State University. The consortium, incorporated in 1985, is open to academic, public, school and special libraries as well as information organizations. DALNET policy is set by its Board of Directors. Decision-making is accomplished with every member institution having representation on the DALNET Board and, if desired, in various policy-making committees and task forces.

Job Brief
An experienced Director will oversee all operations, functions and activities. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for guiding strategic direction and implementing the consortium's vision. Besides strong communication skills, the Director must be able to lead and motivate the consortium as a whole.

Essential Job Functions

  *   Oversee the day-to-day operations of DALNET, including oversight of the Library Services Platform (LSP) and the Digital Archive, while providing work direction to staff, setting priorities, providing regular communication, and budget preparation and monitoring.
  *   Provide reports and communication to the DALNET Board, staff and members. Prepare communication about DALNET, its services, and ongoing planning. Ensure accurate and timely communication to members, staff and stakeholders.
  *   Hire, supervise, and evaluate DALNET department employees. Provide direction and management of projects including developing the scope of work, timelines and implementation plans, and identifying resources required.
  *   Serve as the staff advisor for the DALNET Board and Executive Committee.
  *   Take a leadership role in recommending strategic directions for the DALNET organization. Work with potential new members to study feasibility of membership and investigates new initiatives for potential benefit to members.
  *   Chair key DALNET operational committees, assign tasks and timeframes, monitor and take action on assignments for DALNET staff. Ensure participation by member libraries with appropriate input and decision-making by key groups in a timely way. Manages the process of consortium relations and works to reach group consensus.
  *   Represent DALNET with external constituents and in local, regional, state, and national organizations and functions. Works with affiliate organizations such as the Library of Michigan, state associations, and other consortia, on behalf of the DALNET members.
  *   Assume vendor communications and negotiations for contracting and oversight delivery of vended software, including delivery of new services, enhancements, and new releases.
  *   Oversee work for websites and web applications that support DALNET services. Assign responsibility for supporting member use of new software releases and management of customer enhancement requests for various products.

Unique Duties
Administration of a department of the Wayne State University Library System (ULS) that is completely externally funded yet integrated with other ULS work. Navigating a unique organization that is governed by an external board of directors working within the business practices of its fiscal agent, Wayne State University.

Qualifications

  *   Earned Master's degree in Library and/or Information Sciences from an ALA accredited library school;
  *   At least five years of progressively responsible administrative library administration or related work;
  *   A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  *   Experience supporting delivery of library services;
  *   Demonstrated ability to provide creation problem solving solutions;
  *   Have demonstrated outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, providing leadership for teams, and ability to work across organizational boundaries to achieve goals supporting mission, working toward vision.

Preferred Qualifications

  *   Recent experience in a library consortium and/or information environment;
  *   Experience working with a governance Board;
  *   Experience leading an organization with a primary purpose of providing customer support;
  *   Demonstrated success in grant writing and/or raising non-dues revenue;
  *   Knowledge of higher education trends;
  *   Demonstrated experience in the management of web applications.
