POSITION TITLE:     Reference Librarian

CLASSIFICATION:    Librarian (F.T. – 40 hours)


POSITION SUMMARY:  Responsible for identifying and interpreting user needs;
providing reference, readers' advisory, computer, database, and referral
services to Library patrons; and assisting patrons in material selection.
Responsible for ordering assigned subject areas in the adult collection.
Responsible for developing, planning, and implementing adult programming
events to a diverse community.

ILLUSTRATION OF COMMON LIBRARIAN DUTIES

   1.

   Works on the public service desks providing reference, information
   literacy instruction, collection and eCollection access, and readers'
   advisory assistance to meet the information needs of guests.
   2.

   Assists guests with operations of library equipment.
   3.

   Provides exceptional customer services and displays professional
   business decorum in all interactions with guests and fellow staff.
   4.

   Is knowledgeable of, and carries out, library policy and procedures.
   5.

   Responsible for the building, handles emergencies, and public desk
   supervision during assigned Reference Desk shifts.
   6.

   Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned.


ILLUSTRATION OF UNIQUE KEY DUTIES

   1.

   Creates and implements adult programming, including author visits and
   topical programs.
   2.

   Oversees patron request budget.
   3.

   Oversees reference collection.
   4.

   Assists guests through one-on-one librarian service.
   5.

   Performs collection development and maintenance of assigned collection.
   6.

   Researches and implements new library services and products, including
   technology initiatives.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

   1.

   Library Knowledge: Knowledge of basic library principles, policies,
   procedures, programs, technology, goals, service philosophy, and the ILS.
   2.

   Program Management: Ability to plan, organize, budget, carry out, and
   evaluate a library service program.
   3.

   Customer Service: Commitment to provide exceptional customer service.
   4.

   Collection Development: Knowledge and ability to develop and manage
   collections, including budget oversight.
   5.

   Problem-Solving: Ability to identify problems and opportunities, review
   possible alternative courses of action and utilize information and
   resources for decision-making purposes.
   6.

   Confidentiality: Strong obligation to confidentiality, including guest
   records.
   7.

   Presentation Skills: Ability to develop and give staff and public
   presentations.
   8.

   Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with staff and
   public in-person, on the telephone, or via email.


HOURS: Some evening hours; approximately 13 Saturdays per year;
approximately 3-4 Sundays per year.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

   1.

   Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university required.
   2.

   Master of Library Science from an American Library Association
   accredited library school required.
   3.

   Eligibility for appropriate Michigan Library certificate.
   4.

   Second language preferred.


START DATE: January 2020

SALARY: $39,972
