Please join us at 7:00 pm on December 9, 2020 as we host author Miles
Harvey for a lively discussion of the book Nathaniel Philbrick called “a
masterpiece” and Dave Eggers “ludicrously enjoyable,” The King of
Confidence.

Jesse James Strang is a little known but captivating figure in Michigan
history who, until his assassination in 1856, rules over a breakaway Mormon
colony on Lake Michigan’s Beaver Island, where he was crowned “King of
Earth and Heaven.” King Strang, as the press delighted in calling him,
tried his hand at various roguish trades - lawyer, newspaperman, prophet,
pirate, state legislator - but this true gift was for the pure flimflam of
American celebrity. Author Miles Harvey will give an engaging talk based on
his book about Strang, “The King of Confidence: A Tale of Utopian Dreamers,
Frontier Schemers, True Believers, False, Prophets, and the Murder of an
American Monarch.” Harvey is a national and international best selling
author whose other books include The Island of Lost Maps and Painter in a
Savage Land.
