LGBTQ+ Programming Survey
I am an MLIS student at the University of Washington doing a survey of LGBTQ+ programming in North American libraries on behalf of the King County Library System. To help develop programs for LGBTQ+ youth and families in our community, we're hoping to get a feeling for what programs have been offered in other library systems. We'd like to hear from all kinds of libraries about all kinds of programs. If you could take just a few minutes to tell us about any programs you've offered that focus on the LGBTQ+ community, it would help us immensely. Please join the Michigan Library Association and library professionals from across the state as we converge in Lansing to voice support for policies and funding that support our statewide library community. Beginning at the offices of Government Consulting Services, Inc., the day will include a morning session to gear-up for the day and will conclude with personal appointments with your legislators at the state Capitol building.
By coming together cohesively we can promote our libraries in a visible way, and by our numbers, show the importance of libraries from all corners of Michigan. Face-to-face discussion is the most effective means of communication and together we can help set a foundation of a great working relationships with your representatives. While this event is important, it is only a one-day meeting, and MLA hopes you will use this as a launchpad to open an ongoing line of dialog with your elected officials going forward.

An article written by American Association of School Librarians (AASL) member Kathy Lester has been published in the January/February 2020 issue of AC&E as part of AASL President Mary Keeling's presidential initiative to expand efforts in AASL to provide a safe, respectful, and inclusive space for diverse voices and perspectives. Lester's article, "School Libraries for All Students," can be read online at ace-ed.org<https://ace-ed.org/>. [Pg 54-55]  "Publication in AC&E helps AASL reach a broader educational community with the message that school librarians are equity leaders in their schools," said AASL President Mary Keeling. "As part of my presidential initiative, we are addressing issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion through multiple messages. School librarians have important roles as partners with all educators in providing resources and rich learning experiences for our most vulnerable young citizens."
Published six times a year, AC&E is a digital journal focused entirely on educational equity and access. Lester's article details the many ways school librarians improve learning outcomes, especially for African-American and Hispanic students, economically disadvantaged students, and children with individualized educational plans.
Kathy Lester, school librarian at East Middle School in Plymouth, Michigan, is a member of the AASL Board of Directors as the Regional Director of Region 3. She also currently serves as the past president and current advocacy chair for the Michigan Association for Media in Education.
